Fair/Festival Food

With it being summer, there are plenty of fair/festivals around. So, what is your favorite thing to eat when you go to a fair/festival?

Mine would be a funnel cake and a cheese on a stick, yummy!

Funnel cake, though the Krystals sweet bites taste like them so when i want a treat i swing by there

I remember a store at the mall when i was a kid you could get a hotdog and cheese corn dog, looks like a corn dog on the outside, inside was like a hot dog and cheese kabob. I liked them but havent seen a store like that since, Love orange julius too and only one of the DQ's around here serves them

Deep Fried PB&J, only had it once, that was the only time I have ever seen it but they are great. I "think" they were dipped in the funnel cake batter then deep fried, but they were so good it was sinful.

Definitely Funnel Cake. So hard to come by here. There's only one fair we go to that has it. Most of the fairs here have fried dough...YUCK (JMHO)

I have a bunch of favorites - empanadas, falafel, baklava, and fried calamari. You know - all the fattening things.

I can't stand kettle corn, or whatever they call that popcorn with sugar on it!

I don't think I've ever had funnel cake.

Funnel Cake with Strawberries or Cherries on it. Cotton Candy and I don't know why but Fair and Festival Hot Dogs are the best so much better than those made at home especially loaded with chili, cheese, onion, sauerkraut and relish YUMMY!

Call me weird, but I don't eat festival food. I guess I'm too picky about sanitation and flies. I do buy an occasional cotton candy, but that's it.

Love grilled corn on the cob, corn dogs and elephant ears! I also love our 4-H fair because a church always has a chicken and noodle dinner which is great!

Corn dogs are my #1 favorite.

But I also like funnel cakes, elephant ears, cotton candy, candy apples and french fries.

The best "fries" ever are at the Erie County Fair in Erie County, NY. They slcie the potatoes really thin, like potato chips, but not quite all the way through. When they're deep fried you get these mountains of curly chips that are not quite potato chip crunchy and not quite as soft as a french fry. FABULOUS! And the order is HUGE! A giant heaping plate, enough for at least 2 but usually 3 people was only $6 last time I had them which was 2 years ago. I'm hoping to head up there agian this year to get a bunch of goodies.

I've always wanted to try a corn dog! They just don't have them around here or I haven't noticed them. I have to admit I haven't been to many agricultural fairs. Maybe 2 in my life. Is that where they have corn dogs?

I'd bet that you can buy corn dogs in the freezer section of your grocery store - you may just never have noticed them. Course, I'm not sure why you'd want to....yuck!...but that's just me.

My fave is the funnel cake, with grilled corn coming in second. I love fair food! I haven't had fried oreos at a fair, but a local restaurant serves them and I tried them there. They were pretty good, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to order them again.

Fried dough for sure. Our local fair will be in a couple of weeks so I'll be able to get some then.

Italian sausages too, always taste better at the fair.

Jujubee, most any type of carnival, agricultural fair, street fair, amusement park, etc that has food vendors have corn dogs. One of the best corn dogs I ever had came from a vendor at a flea market of all places!

Please don't let a freezer corn dog take your "corn dog virginity". The experience might be enough to sour you on corn dogs for life. Nuked dogs out of the freezer are nasty. Frozen dogs cooked in the oven will do to get a die hard corn dog lover like me thru a long winter when there are no fairs in sight, but it's not even close to the same.
The best way to embrace the world of the corn dog is to get one fresh and hot, right out of the fryer. Now if you have a deep fryer and want to make your own, that's pretty darn close to the fair experience.

Not to be nosy jujubee, but where are you located? I wonder if corndogs are a regional thing and not as common in some places as in others. I know candy apples are like that, I've known several people that live west of the Mississippi who had no idea what a candy apple was until they came to the North. Caramel apples yes, candy apples, no.

I live in Massachusetts. I go to a lot of street fairs, but I've never seen a corn dog there.

LOL - "corn dog virginity"! I actually did see them in the freezer section of the supermarket, but bypassed them because I assumed they wouldn't taste like the "real" thing.

They are so good fresh. The fairs/festivals around here dip them when you order them. I do not like them from the store. Our ice cream stands sell them too, just like the make at the fairs. I do think certain food is regional.

One of my co-workers is from Maine, and I have a a friend from New Hampshire, I'll have to ask them if corn dogs are common there. Maybe they just aren't as popular in New England?

But you lucky folks in New England do have lots of yummy seafood goodies that other places don't see much of.

I hate carnival/festival food. It smells so oily. I must be one of the only ones. You are what you eat! I get that most people don't eat like that all the time - it just personally grosses me out.

Wow...a little harsh... it grosses you out and you say "you are what you eat"..ouch!

I will eat funnel cake (a small part of one with the family maybe 2 times a year, fried pickles and our band's booth "walking taco" (a bag of fritos split with all the taco fixings in the bag..eat with a fork). No..I don't eat that way often, but I don't think it's "gross" to indulge once in a while.

Also, I try not to overworry about sanitation. At least at fair booths you can see what it is going on "behnd the scenes" since it is all visible. The mysteries behind the swinging kitchen doors in restaurants are scarier to me! LOL I think if we really thought about it...we would never eat anywhere but home. I'm cautious, but realisitic.

In my 38 years of life, I've never known anyone who got sick from eating something contaminated that they got at a fair/festival.

You do have to use common sense. I follow these guidelines:
-Don't buy from booths/vendors that are dirty.
-The only smell should be that of the food being made, no smell of trash, etc.
-Watch to see that workers use tongs/tissue/gloves to handle food
-A sink for handwashing should be readily visible in the booth.
-Try to only buy from booths that do a steady business-more business means fresher food.
-If anything makes you uneasy, keep moving. There are plenty of places to get yummies at a fair.
I also avoid things such as chicken that have a better chance of making you sick if they aren't handles/prepared correctly.
There are many fair food items that aren't oily/greasy-grilled corn, baked potatoes, candy apples, taffy, kettle corn, pretzels, baked goods, sno-cones, etc. None of these things is exactly healthy, but aren't that bad for you once or twice a year as a treat.

I LOVE fair food but I only want to eat it a couple times a summer.

Well I am normally one who eats very healthy but you have to live a little now and then. Some of the booths might smell "yucky greasy" but for the most part the smells are the fair/carnival are lovely!

There are candied apples too they are good I forgot those! And popcorn you must eat popcorn? Everybody eats popcorn!

Next time plug your nose and take a bite of a deep fried milky way bar or twirl some cotton candy around your fingers and eat it off.

Do they dip milky way bars in something before they fry them? I think I must be the only person in the world who hates cotton candy. I don't like the texture and I hate how it makes you all sticky!

At some of the fairs here they put chocolate on the elephant ears and then call them beaver tails. I like elephant ears with cinnamon and sugar and funnel cake with powdered sugar.

The best cotton candy I ever had was made from MAPLE SUGAR. Had a fantastic taste but was just as sticky as regular cotton candy.

OK, now all I can think about is fair food. Must find a corn dog............

The way I like to eat fried dough (elephant ears) is to coat with powdered sugar and then drizzle chocolate syrup on top. Unbelieveably yummy!!! Messy yeah...but worth it!

My favorite way to eat elephant is with maple frosting. Soooooooo good! Other fair food I like: cheese curds, corn dogs, cotton candy, and mini donuts. Only have each of these things once a year so I just put on my fat pants the whole week of the fair and then work out extra hard afterwards, LOL!

The Fall Festival booth that offers battered and deep fried brain (not sure if pork or beef) sandwiches has the longest line and is the first sold out for the night. This is probably regional to my home town in southern Indiana. I don't eat them and am queasy at the thought.

I just can't force myself to eat greasy, fried food so I'll have to go with the shelled peanuts or fresh warmed cashews.

All the deep fried candy bars and other unusual stuff is dipped in either a batter or a coating then deep fried. I haven't tried it but I hear the deep fried candy bars are a deliciosity not to be matched by anything else. The chocolate and caramel gets ooey gooey and tastes good enough to make you yell. Or so I hear. Damnit I am going for it next time!

Thanks for the explanation. If I ever see a deep fried candy bar, I'm getting one! Hmm. I need someplace where I can get a corn dog for "dinner" and a sampling of deep-fried oreos and milkyways for dessert.

Have you ever had a deep-fried hot dog? There is a place around here that I kept hearing raves about. It's been selling deep fried hot dogs since 1929. So when we were in the area, my husband and I tried one out. We just didn't get it. I mean hot dogs are kinda greasy to begin with, and they're usually served hot. So, cooking them in oil just didn't change them that much. Anyone have a different fried hot dog story. (And no, I don't mean corn dogs. This place didn't have corn dogs.)

I can imagine an Oreo or a Milky Way being a whole different story! Some day....
