Question How do I 'rip' a DVD? Not a movie, but a homemade video on a DVD?

I need your tech help! A friend's mom died, and they had made this DVD, a slideshow type of thing with music, to play at the memorial. She gave me a copy to take home, and has asked me to figure out how to make copies of it. I know how to make a copy of a regular audio cd, but I can't figure this out! Can you help me please?

We are using Windows Vista Home Premium. I put the dvd in the drive, and it asks me if I want to play it. It does not ask if I want to copy it. Anyhow, I know how to go to My Computer and select the cd in the drive and tell Windows to copy it, say to my desktop. Then I could go into my windows media player program and burn the cd. But this dvd is apparently different. There is no copyright on it, since her friend made it at home.

Is there a certain program on Vista I am supposed to use? Surely this cannot be difficult! I just can't seem to get the info off of the dvd and onto my hardrive so I can burn it. None of my 'tricks' are working! Can someone help me? Thanks!

Your computer needs to have come with a dvd burner. They're more commonly installed now, but, hardly standard. CD burners are very common now. You can always do a search for dvd burner.

If you're not sure what hardware your computer came with, use this program, Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit, and it will tell you.

What message are you getting when you try to copy and paste it to your desktop?

When I put the DVD in, it says:

Run enhanced content (publisher not specified), Play DVD using Windows Media Player, Play DVD using Windows Media Center, and Open folder to view files.

HOW do I get the info off of the DVD onto my hd so I can burn a copy? Which way is easiest? Thank you for the help.

I would choose " Open folder to view files. "
Then in your browser, click Edit, Select All, then Edit ,then Copy , then go to an empty folder (created beforehand), then in that folder click edit, then paste.
After that ,just use a free dvd burning software and burn it to DVD.

Put a blank DVD in the burner and see which options you get. It will probably ask you if you want to create a CD/DVD. Put your other DVD in the other drvie and choose that drive as the source.

Thanks, Rebecca, but my new HP Slimline only came with one drive, like most new PC's these days: A DVD burner.

STILL trying to figure this out!

You will need to first install dvd ripping software to rip the files from the dvd. Search google for a free program (make sure you have updated your anti-virus whenever downloading & installing files to avoid spyware & trojans).

Make sure your ripping software creates an MP4 file format or it will also need to be encoded to the MP4 format. They do not make it easy like cds--probably because audio & video has to be in sync.

Ahhhhh..........this is starting to make more sense now.

Does Windows (Vista) come with software I can do this with? It had Windows DVD Maker, but I still couldn't figure out how to do it! When I tried using Windows Media Player to rip it, it said select audio CD.......so I knew that was a dead end.......
