Did you work for McDonald's? How do they make those..................?

Hi you guys,
I know this is kinda weird.....really OT, haha, .....but my mom and I LOVE Egg McMuffins. What we want to know is, HOW do they make the egg part? Have you ever noticed how it is so perfectly round and uniform in thickness? As if they have a special round thingamajob to cook the egg in. Someone please tell us----what are they using to make that egg? The yolk is always so light and fluffy, never runny.

Mom and I have tried and tried to make our egg this way. We tried using a round form in a frying pan. No go. The egg leaked out under the form. Tried to poach an egg, and the consistency was close, but we sure didn't have that round shap OR thickness when poaching, LOL, as you can imagine! Tried to bake an egg in a muffin top pan, but the egg came out all wrong, with browning.. McMuffin eggs are never with any browning on them---this only adds to the mystery for us!

So HOW do they do it? Do they poach those eggs somehow? Microwave them in a special rounded pan? I know this is such a simple thing for someone to answer for us. Its just we don't know anyone who works for McD's, so we've got no one to answer. A search online lead me to nowhere, only a hungrier stomach this morning!

In fact, I have everything in my fridge to make myself an Egg McDelicious this morning, even the Canadian Bacon! But tis the mystery of the perfectly round and thick egg that throws me off! I'd love to be able to simulate that egg for mom tomorrow, when I visit her. Thanks you guys!

YUMMMMMMMMMMMM!

I have worked at McD's. The secret to the egg shape is the egg cooker thingie McD's have. It sorta reminds me of a 6-pack plastic soda holder..only the egg cooker has thicker bands and is made of teflon coated metal. You put the egg cooker on the grill, swab some of the (sickening, blech !) grease/lard/Oleo on the parts, crack an egg into it..( real eggs btw)...put a metal flat "lid" over it,the lid has a small funnel on top..you pour water in the funnel and I suppose it dribbles down over the cooking eggs..Next, set the timer..and it cooks from the heat of the grill. I believe these 6 pack cooker things are custom made for McD's..so you cannot buy them in a store. The fluffy size is probably from the steam of the water.

And again I know the answer but tell Mom if she wanted my help, she should have taught her daughter some manners. You have a LOT of questions but never bother to thank the people who spend their valuable time answering them. You just post and post and ask for more help again!

You can find the answers to most of your NUMEROUS questions yourself by running an internet search but your time must be more valuable than other people's. Since you can't even take the time to say thanks to the people who answer, I guess taking the time to look up what you want to know is out of the question. LOL.

Thanks, Cubmom! That really answered the mystery for us! So they just put this special cooker actually ON the grill, and not in an oven? That is really something. I had a feeling water was used somehow, but I have never heard of a cooking device like this. And you answered my next question---can I buy one---probably not. Darn it! But hey, I bet I could eventually find one on ebay! I'm going to have to look. Thanks for answering this for me. I am wondering if I could somehow achieve the same result with my muffin top pan, adding a little water like you said, and covering it with foil and putting it in the oven maybe?........hmmm..........I'd better check on ebay for one first before I create a disaster!

And OpalDancing, here you go again, blasting me for making conversation.

On a forum.

In "The Cafe'." You know, you are quick to assume I don't do internet searches. I do. But I don't always find the answer I am looking for. And perhaps I just really enjoy the social interaction I get from 'talking' to other people on message boards. Isn't that what they are for? Maybe I like hearing from people their personal experiences on different things in life, whether it be about a stupid pan they use at McDonald's, to what's for dinner Sunday night!

If you don't like my discussions, then just don't bother to answer them. IGNORE them please instead of insulting me.

And why again you would say I never thank people is yet again beyond me. I don't know why you are after me this morning. I have never said one unkind word to you before. I don't even know who you are, but you ARE another human being, like myself, who deserves happiness. Now, please give this harping on me a rest.

I'm sorry you are having a bad day, but badgering me over and over sure isn't going to make your day any better. You certainly aren't going to ruin MY day, so please, I hope you too can have a GOOD day also.

Now, let me go and experiment in the kitchen.................I'm hungry!

I worked at McD's for two days in Billings, MT in around 1982. It was across the street from a high school I was 19 and lazy and when the lunch rush came the first day I almost cried. The second day I left and never went back.

LOL

I knew about the egg things though. You can make one with heavy duty tin foil or use a metal round cookie cutter.

As far as asking members questions that is what makes the Cafe the Cafe. Sure you could look something up as I often do however how do you know by looking it up whether it would really work for you?
And you miss out on the lively conversation and funny anecdotes.
It's wonderful to have input from other people.

And now you made me want one so I am getting out the cookie cutter and trying it.

Keep asking the questions and those of us who enjoy reading and posting will do so. Those who don't can skip over the threads or maybe spend some of the precious time they waste putting people down doing some volunteer work or something to make the world a better place.

Thank you, Annadrose! I found a round cookie cutter, although it seems too big, but I'm going to wrap it in toil so it has a bottom to it, spray it with PAM, put a little water in it, break an egg into it and cover it with a little more foil. I guess I'm going to have to try to bake it. Hope this works, hahah!

Why can't there just be a McDonald's closer to my house, LOL? Ohhh, I'd be in BIG trouble then, haha!

Instead of a cookie cutter I'd use a biscuit cutter..thicker bands..or make one out of tin foil like you mentioned..I believe , also, that we set the timer for about 5 min or so..we also would take the spatula and just do a quick whip on the yolk , just to break it..

oh, and yes, this is cooked on top of the grill..the heat of the grill cooks the eggs...after breakfast the grill cooks cleans the grill top of discarded egg "parts" , and then switches over to the lunch menu of hamburgers..

McD's "grilled chicken " is cooked the same way as EMM's really, only the "metal cooker thingie" is squared..put a frozen chicken patty in the square on top of the grill, set the metal lid on top, pour water in the funnel, and set the timer...

Ahhh, you know, I was wondering about breaking the yolk. Good tip, CubMom2! On the egg mcmuffin, the yolk is always intact, never mixed into the white, so I wasn't sure about that, but I figured it was better to be safe than sorry. I went ahead and pierced the yolk. Have you ever had an unpierced one blow up in the microwave? Having that happen once makes you remember to pierce the yolk, or else, haha!

So it sounds like it's going to take this egg a few minutes to cook then..... You know, I bet I could probably get this done in the microwave somehow also.... What I need then is a plastic cookie cutter, not this metal one I'm trying to use. Ohh, all for the love of an egg mcmuffin...so much trouble, hahah!

Thanks for the tip!

Yeah its a special 6 pack looking thing. I worked at Mc D's for many years.

You can accomplish the same thing using an Egg Poacher, just poach the eggs longer to cook the yolks all the way through. I do it all the time. Also the Canadian bacon put it in a skillet for a little bit on each side to warm it up and be sure to put the cheese on immediatley to get it to melt.

REALLY? Wow, I had NO idea about this! I never worked at a fast food restaurant, so I don't know all of these little inside tidbits of interesting info.....

I've really got to score me one of these versatile egg/chicken cooking things!

We make them by using a small round tupperware thing that is the same size as the English muffin. Spray with Pam (or equivalent). Crack egg and fork it a few times to break the yoke. Microwave on low power for about 2 minutes.

You can buy the canadian bacon rounds in the grocery; usually found near the lunchmeat.

No specialty instrument required.

Tupperware huh? I was going to use a round cookie cutter but it's plastic and I was afraid it would burn in the pan so I made an apparatus out of tin foil and it worked great. Tasted yummy but I did not add the cheese sigh because.....well it's not FatAss Friday lol.

When I go shopping I am going to look for a metal round biscuit or cookie cutter. My husband will love this.

Umm...it's a microwave recipe. Any microwaveable plastic container or a ceramic ramekin should be fine.

This is how I make mine.I use a microwavable coffee cup.Put a slight amount of butter around the insides.Pour the small egg (egg and yolk pre-mixed together) into the cup.Microwave for ,I don't know about 30 sec. or so, you have to watch it,then just before its about done, put your cheese on top and microwave another 15 sec.or so.When done just use a butter knife to loosen around the edges and it should slide right out.

We make these for dinner some nights, I have a small rectangular pan and I put 8 eggs in a bowl, wisk it with a little milk and then pour it in the sprayed pan. Then I cook it in the oven for ? I don't know, between 10-20 minutes and then when it's cooked, we add bacon and cheese to english muffins... It's easy to cut these into squares and put on the muffin!

This same thing can be made into a wrap, just use the egg, bacon and cheese and put it in a warmed tortilla... Yummy!

Oh I didn't see that part. I don't use or own a microwave. I did mine right in the skillet. I used a tin foil form I made and turned it way down low. It tasted great.

Yes I'm one of those weirdos that doesn't use a microwave for health and good taste reasons.

I don't use one either. I enjoy cooking (and eating) too much to rush cooking and ruin flavors with a microwave.

You could use a can opener to take the top and bottom off of a tin can and cook in a skillet.

I have and recommend the toaster that can make toast and an egg at the same time.

It's a regular toaster but there's a little side "cup" that you put the egg in to cook it. A little bit of water goes in the bottom, an egg goes in a little metal cup over the water and a lid goes over the whole thing to hold in the steam. There's a button you hit for "Egg and Toast" and it times the cooking so both are done at the same time. FANTASTIC for making breakfast sandwiches. And you can make just toast or just eggs if you want to, no problem.

Santa brought it for me several years ago but I know they're available at many stores and cost around $20.

We just scramble up the eggs and throw them on the muffin ... or in a hurry I might microwave in a one cup pyrex glass measuring dish ... that works okay.

I had this toaster, but it died after about a year....and 2 moves....so, I guess I got my money out of it. But, I would buy it again. We used the egg thing quite a bit, but the downside is that you can only make one at a time.

I would suggest the tin can idea.....a tuna fish can is the perfect size and height actually, but make sure you spray it with a little Pam before you use it. My standard size skillet holds 3 cans. The other thing that I found is if you are an egg white only person, you can use a silver dollar pancake pan (got mine and crate and barrel) and that works if you want to make smaller, thinner egg portions.

OK, it is probably a dumb question since several here like this product, but is it hard to clean????

This doesn't make sense to me. You would heat up food, but you wouldn't cook an egg in the microwave? Please explain the logic.

I get this one.

I don't cook meals, make recipes, or use my microwave as a primary source of cooking. It is one thing to heat up some water, set it for a minute or two to heat up something that is cold, or cooking something that is specifically designed for microwave cooking (prepackage steam bags of frozen veggies or desserts that require a 20 second zap)....but, starting with fresh food or raw items....I never put that stuff in the microwave.

Eggs are a good example. If you take an egg and crack one in a pan on the stove and put one in the microwave....the consistency of the egg will be different...almost rubbery from the microwave.

When microwaves were first introduced there we a lot of people who saw it as an alternative to ever using their stove again....and there are a lot of people who live completely off of meals and items designed for microwave cooking and convenience. I am not one of those people who buy those items, in fact...I stay away from them.

So, when she says no microwave "cooking" for her....I totally got it. I don't "cook" anything in the microwave....only minimally use to reheat items that have already been through the cooking process.

Totally logical.

OK, I guess I get it. But I still stand by cooking my Egg McMuffin egg in the microwave. It comes out perfect and is not at all rubbery. YMMV, of course.

I also "cook" frozen vegetables in the microwave, but nothing else that I can think of. Oh, baked potatoes on occasion, too.

Thanks for the explanation.

Food cooked in the microwave tastes horrible. And it's not the healthiest way to cook things. I personally don't even heat food in it. I can put a plate of (cooked) food in the toaster oven it heats up in 10 or 15 minutes.

Cjs216, you asked the question and while a few answered I agree with them, it to me does not taste the same at all, to cooking something in a microwave to cooking it on the skillet or oven top. It always will remind me several years back when the kids were younger and we stayed in Lancaster P.A., we had decided to eat breakfest quick before going to Dutch Wonderland. Anyway we went into the Wawa's they have there and ordered egg sandwiches on muffins, it was cooked in the microwave so horrible and talk about tasting like rubber yuck yuck. There is nothing like cooking a egg the old fashion way, but again to each his.or her own. What ever makes you happy and if it tastes good to you then enjoy. Peace. Catherine

OK I want one after reading this thread, I haven't had one in months lol but those McD egg sandwiches are goooood!
And I remember my grandma using those old fashioned egg poaching metal things, little silver, round with a handle..kinda like what you are describing...I've never really made eggs that way though as everyone in our family loves scrambled eggs. We make breakfast biscuits or sandwiches at times but we just put scrambled eggs on them.

I've never had a problem cleaning my egg and toast toaster.
The parts of the egg cooker can go in the dishwasher and the cup the water goes in just wipes clean. I use cooking spray on the egg cup and have no problem with sticking.
The toaster part cleans up just like a regular old toaster.

If you do pick one up get the bigger one, like I said we have the one that makes 1 egg and for a family of 4 you have to wait about 7-8 min for each muffin to be made.
