Basket for new home - what goes in it?

Has anyone ever done one of those baskets for someone moving into a new place, that has some common household items in it?

Like bread - so you never go hungry; Salt - so you always have flavor; a Penny - so you never know poverty, etc.

I might not be stating it correctly, but I'm hoping someone might get what I mean.

I also thought of chocolate chip cookies - so you always have sweetness.

Does anyone know? TIA.

If you are trying to tie in a cute saying or poem, yes.

Me, I go for practicality (if that's even a word). I did this for our neighbors when they moved in, well, without the basket, I left neatly arranged items on the kitchen counter. I chose cleaning items like Windex, Fantastik, bleach, sponges, viva towels, etc, etc, etc figuring they would clean. I know I've cleaned each place we've moved to even if it "looks" clean.

The bonus for me is the items were free or very cheap by my shopping habits. I also like to give this type of gift at wedding showers by filling a plastic trash can or bucket with cleaning items.

Have fun deciding !

Item/Gift Significance

Bread - You will never go hungry
Broom - Sweep away the evil; Your house will always be clean
Candle - You will always have light
Coin - Bring good fortune for the year
Honey - Represents the sweetness of life
Olive Oil - Health, Light and believe it or not, keep your husband faithful
Plant - You will always have life
Rice - Sign of fertility
Salt - Represents life's tears; You can also place a pinch of salt at the threshold of each door and window for good luck; Mend all wounds
Wine - Never go thirsty; Your home brings you happiness and joy
Wood - Your life/home will always have stability, harmony and peace

From the movie "It's A Wonderful Life" where Mary Bailey gave housewarming gifts. The gifts were:

A small whisk broom: Sweep away the evil; your house will always be clean.

A shaker of salt: Represents life's tears; or place a pinch at the threshold of each door and window for good luck; Mends all wounds

A loaf of bread: You will never go hungry

A pretty candle in a jar: You will always have light.

A jar of honey: for the sweetness in life

A bottle of wine: You will never go thirsty. Your home brings you happiness and joy.

A bottle of olive oil: Health, Light, and to keep your husband faithful.

Oh how neat! I didn't know there were so many of them. I just had heard of a few.

Thank you!

I think both ideas are great! I've done the practical one before...never heard of the poem one, but it's definately a possibility in the future. I love the olive oil.
