Real neighborly.....

I saw a report on the tv news last night that the state of NY is giving free one way tickets to FL.

Supposedly it's to connect people from NY who can't support themselves with family in FL to support them.

Read: NY is tired of some people and wants to get rid of them, FL gets stuck !!!!! Maybe FL will give them one way tickets back ?!?

Although it is somewhat of an innovative idea to get rid of folks deemed less than desirable. Yet another mess of a government handout.

Wow, that's an interesting solution....I wonder if CA will try it? We could send our extras to, say, Montana. They don't have nearly enough folks in Montana!

Ummm....no thanks! We have plenty of people in Montana!
Unless of course you want to send them to EASTERN MONTANA. It's pretty desolate and uninhabitated

Since most of ours are illegals, how about sending them back to Deep in the Heart of Mexico.

I saw that, too. It's for homeless people and they send them where they have family. They also follow up afterwards to be sure they made it and all it ok.

I don't know if it's the best solution or how I feel about it. My first thought was that they were just sending their problem somewhere else, but on the other hand, if they are sending them to family, maybe they can get it together and not be homeless anymore? I don't know.

nope....
the homeless situation is not proportionate to the illegal population. Most of the homeless population have a mental disease that has gone untreated and created chaos in their life. Most of the homeless have had difficulties in the past holding down jobs because of their mental disease.

Further a large percentage of the homeless are vets who have mental illness--what does that say about our country that we don't take care of the men and women who protected our freedoms?

I find your statement "the homeless situation is not proportionate to the illegal population" VERY hard to believe... In NYC there are currently approx 10,000 homelss FAMILIES. I can PROMISE that there are more illegals.
And your last statement about taking care of our men and women who protected our freedom... Yes it is pathetic that we treat the same people we fought against better then those who fought for us....

Just can't stand a LOT of people associated with NY. (I'm talking government here.....) There are other reasons too, but that's the biggie.

The indigent / homeless will always be comprised of those who fell on hard times, those who can but do not help themselves, and the mentally ill who cannot cope.

My mother is a psych RN in mental health. The problem is, funding has been cut drastically. Mental institutions have been closed and many, many who were permanently housed in a safe environment, are now on the streets. They don't know how to live the way most of us do, much less hold jobs. They don't have the ability or skills to "make it" out there. As a result, crime, loitering, homelessness, and hunger numbers have all gone up.

It's a problem seldom addressed.

Interesting NY (or any state) can shuffle people off for another state to take care of and yet can't export the illegals.

Is this even legal ?. I don't understand, do you mean NY is wiling to buy tickets to send off the homeless to another state ? Are they asking the family of the homeless if they can afford to care or even feed this person or families in some cases. Wonder when they load them on that bus does NY give them money to eat on ?. wow this is so strange to me. NY is shifting their problem on another state to pick it up, wonder how the state of FL feels about this . It's not like any state now a days are rolling in money and programs every state has been somewhere on the news about budget cuts, program cuts and their OWN homeless problem. Surely there has to be a better way of dealing with this than spending money on tickets and bombarding another state with the homeless. I don't even know if this is even legal to do seems so weird and degrading to the homeless, not all of them are bad people, heck I bet there's plenty that use to have homes, jobs and a life before a terrible event took it all away.No they are homeless and no one cares..

Unhappy

A couple of things to talk about. First off yes there are alot of homeless people in New York, but I also believe there are homeless people in all states. As far as illegial immigrants yes we New York do have alot, afterall New York as always been a melting pot of so many people whose desecents came here from all over the world. Then of course it is truly sad that alot of the homeless people here in the streets of New York CIty are veterans who sadly are homeless and are alcoholics, believe me I go to the city all the time and they are on every corner. You see I feel sorry for each one and want to and most of the time I give money to them or I do more I purchase a pretzel or hotdog for them , because who wants to be hungry that is so sad. We should as a nation take better care of our veterans who helped to defend our country and alot of them suffer mental illness as a result. I sincerely hope there is more to the story, then only New York giving these people a one way ticket. On a final note as a native New Yorker to me personally it it the best state to me, it has everything and it is not as bad as people make it out to be. Why would any native New Yorker want to leave, not me. But the more important issue is of the poor and homeless and hungry and they are in every state its a plain fact.... Peace . Catherine

I thought I heard last night that NY was giving tickets out of NY to the homeless to anywhere---any state, as long as they had a place to go to, whether it was a home with a friend, or a sister in a condo........... didn't they say to anywhere, not just FL?

Who has determined that this is a mess? Has it just started or has it been going on for a while? If it just started how can you conclude it's a mess?

Smaller towns used to do that all the time. If someone came to town and didn't have a job or relatives, the local police would give them a bus ticket, small amount of food money and tell them to not come back.

The mentally ill were thrown out of the institutions, residential care houses, and outpatient programs, back when Reagan was president. He didn't see the need for it. That was the beginning of a large influx of homeless on the streets. Many of them Viet Nam vets. Some were lucky, like my husbands cousin, whose parents were still alive and could take her back home. Her mom fought for over a year to re-instate her disability and eligibility status, and finally it was changed. But most didn't have family members who could or would do what this woman did. She was so afraid that she would die and her daughter would be left uncared for. She managed to get her put in a home and she is still there today. And my husband's aunt must have sensed it, because she died shortly after. The dad is still alive, age 93, he couldn't take care of her now.

Sending them to relatives sounds as good as any other option. It might work for some and that would be great. Most need to be cared for on some level and if their family can do that, it helps everyone.
