I will NEVER complain about grocery prices again!

I just watched a youtube video of an American woman living in Japan. She took her camera to the local market and one can of tuna was $4.00! A small box of seedless grapes were $25! A 10lb bag of rice was $25.00!! She spent $60 and got very little to show for it!

I plan to go shopping tomorrow and I will actually smile at the checkout!

Susiecat, do you have the link to the video? I am always watching vids of the young teachers who go to Japan and India and China, to teach English. I am interested in what their life is like there. I'd like to see that video, if you can tell me the name of it. Thanks!

DH and I lived in Tokyo back in 1992 for six months and yes, the prices are outrageous! I'd do it again in a heartbeat though, we both loved living there.

Sure here's the link. YouTube - Dear Life: Grocery Shopping

I would love to go around living in different countries for 1 year at a time! Even if they are expensive.

Hearing this really makes you appreciate the good old USA! I remember when we lived in Hawaii the grocery prices were very high compared to the mainland. ~Lisa

DS lives in Taiwan (teaching English). The food there is pretty reasonable, especially eating out. He's never lived in Japan, but has traveled to many Asian countries. He has always marveled at how cheap the food is compared to here.

I was there many years ago and a watermelon was about $40 if I remember right. A round of golf was over $100. I think this was probably in the late eighties. Beef was something like $90 a pound. You had to wait years to buy a car because you couldn't buy a car unless you had proof of a parking space. It took forever to get a driver's license. Years for some types of licenses. If you think about inflation since that time, these prices seem more reasonable. Of course reasonable is as reasonable does.

What do you make an hour in Japan? Is it the same as the states? that is what matters.

I had a Navy wife friend when we were in the military that had been stationed over there with her husband and she also said it was VERY expensive. He was a high ranking officer and they could not afford a car, they also could not get into base housing and lived on the economy paying $2000 American dollars a month for a 700 sq foot apartment that they had to walk up FIVE flights of stairs to get to. They got around by bike, and at least they could shop at the comissary which was quite a bit cheaper.
