Wow - never thought I'd agree with the ACLU

Maybe that was too strong and sweeping a statement.

I *rarely* agree with them.

But this time, I think they have it absolutely right. Apparently, Obama wants to give us all cookies.

WASHINGTON – The American Civil Liberties Union submitted comments today to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) opposing its recent proposal to reverse current federal policy and allow the use of web tracking technologies, like cookies, on federal government websites. Cookies can be used to track an Internet user’s every click and are often linked across multiple websites; they frequently identify particular people.

Actually it doesn't surprise me with this new administrations agenda. I don't think it's going to turn out to be what the voters think they voted for at all. I think it's going to get even scarier before people see the light and hopefully change things in future elections.

What's fishy about this to me is that I assume the administration will have access to 'free' research they can use to PR things on their agenda. I don't think government dollars should be used that way (just like you can't use a government phone to make campaign calls). They will have profiles of people who look at various websites just like businesses who are gathering info via tracking companies do so they can better advertise their schtuff.

If they are tracking the movements of a certain person that's one thing. For instance, if there is a suspected terrorist and they want to see what he is googling, that's one thing. But if I go to irs.gov to find out something about my taxes, that does not mean I have given them permission to then know what I google.
