Walmart Scam

Got this in an email today, Snopes says it is undetermined, I still will watch for something like this.

>>
>> My husband and I experienced the same thing at Walmart on I 10 East a
>> few months ago. Thank God I noticed the $40 cash back before leaving
>> the area since I was the one signing. Consequently, we ended up taking
>> the money since the cashier persisted that it could not be deleted.
>> ...Didn't know it was a scam.

>> Subject: FW: Check your receipts esp. Wal-Mart!
>>
>> OMG! YES! THIS IS TRUE! It happened to me at Wal-Mart (Supercenter
>> Store #1279, 10411 N Freeway 45, Houston , TX 77037 ) a month ago. I
>> bought a bunch of stuff, over $150, & I glanced at my receipt as the
>> cashier was handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of $40. I told her
>> I didn't request a cash back & to delete it. She said I'd have to take
>> the $40 because she couldn't delete it. I told her to call a
>> supervisor. Supervisor came & said I'd have to take it. I said NO!
>> Taking the $40 would be a cash advance against my Discover & I wasn't
>> paying interest on a cash advance!!!!! If they couldn't delete it then
>> they would have to delete the whole order. So the supervisor had the
>> cashier delete the whole order & re-scan everything! The second time I
>> looked at the electronic pad before I signed & a cash-back of $20 popped
>> up. At that point I told the cashier & she deleted it. The total came
>> out right. The cashier agreed that the electronic pad must be
>> defective. Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad was defective
>> because she NEVER offered me the $40 at the beginning. Can you imagine
>> how many people went through before me & at the end of her shift how
>> much money she pocketed?

>> Just to alert everyone. My co worker went to Milford DE Walmart last
>> week. She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her
>> along and didn't give her a receipt. She asked the cashier for a receipt
>> and the cashier was annoyed and gave it to her. My co worker didn't look
>> at her receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked
>> for $20 cash back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK. My co worker called
>> Walmart who investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money.
>> She then called her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her
>> this. There is a scam going on. The cashier will ask for cash back and
>> hand it to her friend who is the next person in line. Please, Please,
>> please check your receipts right away when using debit cards. The store
>> has the cashier under investigation now. We can only pray that she is
>> caught very soon.
>>
>> I am adding to this. My husband and I were in WalMart North Salisbury
>> and paying with credit card when my husband went to sign the credit card
>> signer he just happen to notice there was a $20 cash back added.. He
>> told the cashier that he did not ask nor want cash back and she said
>> this machine has been messing up and she canceled it. We really didn't
>> think anything of it until we read this email. Please be aware

I have to say that it's probably not true. Any credit card I've had doesn't offer you the ability to get cash back. Debit cards do, but the customer has to be the one to request it, not the cashier.

Actually, it asks me every time I use my Discovercard. Also every time I use my debit card.

My Discover will allow cash back and it's a credit card. I don't know whether a cashier (Walmart or otherwise) can finangle a cash back option or if it has to be the customer.

The answer here is that each and every one of us should always be diligent about our own business. If we quit talking on our cell phones and start paying attention, we'd always be sure all of our transactions were correct.

Cashiers don't normally have the ability to do cashback from their own register, the customer has to initiate it. But also, there are places like our RiteAid downtown, where if you tell the cashier you want cashback, you enter your pin# on the pad but then the cashier has to enter the $ amount into the register. The customer doesn't get to enter the $ amount. So there is a potential for problems there I suppose.
RiteAid is the only place I have seen that, not sure why/how it works that way. But the cashiers there can't initiate cashback transactions on their own kwim, the customer still has to select cashback on the pad first...

Wink

Deddlastt you just make me laugh not to get off topic here but when I read your post and saw you posted the word finangle he has used that word for years and years and in fact his younger brother Micheal who sadly passed away at the age of 50 almost 27 years ago, my uncle would always tell me and my brothers his work business is being a finangler and each time I hear that word I think of him so thanks for the chuckle.

I think the fact that the email demonizes WalMart is the tipoff.

If the story being described were true, whether it was WalMart or Target or Macys wouldn't matter and it wouldn't be confined to just one store chain.

My Discover asks if I want cash. I would be charged fees for accepting it though, so the answer is always NO.

I sent it to my dad just in case because he shops at the Milford De store. He said he has never had a problem though
