| FL DMV fees to be raised...some up to 150%!
I renewed my drivers license last night for the $20 fee. Starting Sept 1st it's going up to $48!! If you expire up to 2/2011 you can renew now before the price increase. DHSMV Motorist Fee Schedule Cost of driving in Florida to go up By Bill Varian, Times Staff Writer The cost of getting a driver's license, car registration and vehicle title is about to get a lot more expensive. Jacking up the cost of putting a vehicle on the road is one of the steps the Florida Legislature took to balance this year's budget as tax receipts plummeted. Little of the money stays local even though local property taxes subsidize the cost of a driver's license if you get it at the county Tax Collector's Office instead of the state Department of Motor Vehicles. The increases take effect Sept. 1. If you're due for license or registration renewal after that, consider getting it done early. Here's a look at the price hikes Renewing driver's license: Before: $20 After: $48 Percent increase: 140% Delinquent fee Before: $1 After: $15 Percent increase: 1400% Replace license Before: $10 After: $25 Percent increase: 150% Registration renewal Vehicles under 2,500 lbs For example: Honda Civic, Toyota Yaris, Mazda Miata and Hyundai Accent Before: $28.10 After: $46.65 Percent increase: 66% Vehicles 2,500 to 3,499 lbs For example: Nissan Altima, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Ford Taurus, Chevy Malibu and Honda Accord Before: $36.10 After: $57.65 Percent increase: 60% Vehicles over 3,500 lbs For example: Chevy Silverado, Chevy Impala, Ford Explorer, Dodge Charger, Nissan Maxima, Toyota 4Runner Before: $46.10 After: $71.15 Percent change: 54% Transfer title with original registration (used car purchase) For example: a used Toyota Camry with the Sea Turtle plate Total title and registration, including initial registration fee Before: $209.85 After: $396.40 Percent change: 89% Original title (new car purchase) For example, Toyota 4Runner Total title and registration, including initial registration fee Before: $191.85 After: $403.90 Percent change: 110% Original title (transfer from out of state) For example: Honda Civic Total title and registration, including initial registration fee Before: $161.85 After: $351.40 Percent change: 117% Source: Hillsborough County Tax Collector

Our fees at the DMV have just about doubled also. Not sure about licenses but I have recently renewed plates on 2 cars and the price was twice as much as last year. There's also a new penalty type late fee of $25/month up to $100. I am sure the state govt will collect quite a bit just off that one.. some branches have hired off duty police to work security at their branch because customers get so mad.

I just renewed my driver's license in Virginia. It costs $32 plus we have new licenses.... no smiling in them and they're in a greyish, black tone... no color. Plus the picture is on there twice and one is a hologram... you have to turn it a certain way to see it. At our DMV, you pay $5.00 extra if you go TO the DMV office rather than doing your transaction online (other than things like driver's license pics taken, etc.). Renewing registration, etc. you do online or you pay an extra $5. |
