FL DMV fees to be raised...some up to 150%!

I renewed my drivers license last night for the $20 fee. Starting Sept 1st it's going up to $48!! If you expire up to 2/2011 you can renew now before the price increase.

DHSMV Motorist Fee Schedule

Cost of driving in Florida to go up
By Bill Varian, Times Staff Writer

The cost of getting a driver's license, car registration and vehicle title is about to get a lot more expensive.

Jacking up the cost of putting a vehicle on the road is one of the steps the Florida Legislature took to balance this year's budget as tax receipts plummeted. Little of the money stays local even though local property taxes subsidize the cost of a driver's license if you get it at the county Tax Collector's Office instead of the state Department of Motor Vehicles. The increases take effect Sept. 1. If you're due for license or registration renewal after that, consider getting it done early.

Here's a look at the price hikes

Renewing driver's license:
Before: $20
After: $48

Our fees at the DMV have just about doubled also. Not sure about licenses but I have recently renewed plates on 2 cars and the price was twice as much as last year. There's also a new penalty type late fee of $25/month up to $100. I am sure the state govt will collect quite a bit just off that one.. some branches have hired off duty police to work security at their branch because customers get so mad.

Sorry the prices are going up. I think you will be paying a little more than we do for renewing a driver's license. I think ours might be around $30. I would love to pay what you do for your registration renewal. I think ours goes by the age and or value of the car, but commercial pays more and that includes any pick up trucks. Even our two old cars are around $85 a year. It never seems to go down. We also have to get our cars smogged ever other year so that adds at least another $50. If they say you have to go to a special smog only station it is even more.

I checked on line to see how much the fees were for a new car bought 8/2009 and here is the registration amts.

$10,000 car $199.
$20,000 $314
$30,000 $429
$40,000 $544

No wonder we only have old cars.

I just renewed my driver's license in Virginia. It costs $32 plus we have new licenses.... no smiling in them and they're in a greyish, black tone... no color. Plus the picture is on there twice and one is a hologram... you have to turn it a certain way to see it.

At our DMV, you pay $5.00 extra if you go TO the DMV office rather than doing your transaction online (other than things like driver's license pics taken, etc.). Renewing registration, etc. you do online or you pay an extra $5.
