I would beat the living $h!t out him if it were my child. That would be my first reaction. If I were PMSing I might do it even if I did not know the mother and child. Normally I don't fight or get into fights but this just makes my blood boil.

Don't even get me started.. what an @-hole. I'd totally beat the crap out of him, and heaven help him if Trent was there.

Obviously, this guy was in the wrong.

I'd also like to see the mom of the child who was 'crying'. There are crying kids and then there are wailing kids who shouldn't be in stores. Having parented my own brood through that phase, I know there are times kids are just plain tired and inconsolable... and that's when it's time to go home. It sounds like this mom may have worn out her welcome with the other customers and been one of those parents who just keeps on pushin' the cart through the store, kid screaming the whole way, with an occasional, "You shut up or I'm not gonna buy you anything!" tossed in the mix.

I feel badly for the child. They *will* be obnoxious... it's just what two year olds do. But the mom's job should have been to either fix the problem or head to the car.

Either way, this guy was way out of line.

You know I was wondering how he got so close to put his hands on the child. If I saw a man approaching especially one who had made the comments he made I would grab my baby and RUN for the service desk or security whichever was closer.

anna, that's what makes me wonder how much parenting the mom was doing while the child was crying. It didn't say, "He pushed the mom out of the way and began to slap the child in the face." Granted, she may have just turned her back for a second to grab a can of green beans, but it does sound like she was a far enough distance from the child that no altercation between her and the man took place while he got to the child.

I have to wonder if he isn't mentally ill or something. That's just really bizarre behavior.

I came unhinged on a "sacker" at Kroger when she told my then 18 month old son "you know, you're really loud. I have a headache and you need to shut up". He wasn't crying or screaming--he was just doing the typical 18 month old jabber, jabber, jabber!
God help anyone who ever laid their hands on my child as described in the article!

I believe I heard that this happened in the check-out lane, so I guess she was on her way out.

I wouldn't hesitate to break his freaking jaw after the first slap, let alone four.

There are no words for what I would do if someone said this to my kid. They wouldn't have a job, that's for sure. egads...the nerve.

I can take a lot and am generally easy going and let things slide, but when it comes to my kids I'm like the proverbial mother bear and it doesn't matter where I am.

There's no excuse for striking a child.

I have told kids to be quiet though. Once a dad and his toddler came into the library. The kid was yelling and carrying on. The father did nothing. So, I said to the kid, "No screaming in the library. If your Dad was minding you, he'd tell you that we whisper in the library, not yell." Both the kid and the dad looked startled. I didn't care. At least the kid stopped screaming.

I don't understand how parents can be so inconsiderate.

OMG I am totally loss for words , for someone who does not believe in ever striking a child , I would be livid for anyone to ever strike my child.... The nerve of this person to think it was okay to put his hands on someone else's child.... Peace. Catherine

According to the article, they were still shopping in Aisle 7. I watched the video of the man in court.... he looked mean and big ... his face was twitching and his jaw was clenching.

I wouldn't have let it gotten that far that a man could have struck my child. But if he had, I would have struck back for sure.

What DID the woman do after the man hit her child FOUR times??!! How did he have the chance to strike the child that many times?

Had a pt at the mental hosp that I used to work at who cut a kids throat in a store with a straight razor because the kid was screaming and the mom ignored the child and it got on her nerves.. The child died. The woman who did this is living her life out in a mental hospital.
Another pt drowned a child in a lake ( 6 yr old ) at a church camp just cause she wanted to see how it felt for the life to drain out of someone in her hands. She was a counsler at the camp and was over the 6-8 yr olds. The other kids saw her do this. This woman is still in the mental hospital also. I dont think either of them belong there. They belong in prison, locked behind bars. Instead, since they are in the mental hosp.they get to go places with the group, go to different things that go on in town like fairs and concerts and such.
People are crazy. And they aint all behind locked doors.

Ahh...I should have read the article. I was listening to the radio and they said "check out lane seven" and referred to a cashier as an I eyewitness.
