When I read your post in the John Travolta thread it immediately made me think of this book:

_Against Medical Advice: One Family's Struggle with an Agonizing Medical Mystery_ by James Patterson, Hal Friedman, and Cory Friedman

If you haven't had a chance to read it yet it, it is really good. My son only has Aspergers, OCD and Anxiety so we've had it pretty easy (all things being relative :-)
