Flu shot: Do you or don't you?

Just curious what everyone is or has done with the seasonal flu shot and the H1N1 shot.....

I have a child with a compromised immune system so we need to get both. If it weren't for him we probably wouldn't bother.

Not getting either, the kids won't be either (egg allergies, contraindicated).

I heard them talking about that on the radio this morning. Very strange.

I don't get flu shots. I know they say you can't get the flu from the shot but both my MIL and I have had the shot twice and both times we got the flu a week later. I now take my chances and knock on wood havent had the flu since my last shot.

You missed one option in the poll:

Got H1H1 before the vaccine was available and should now be immune

lol...

My Dad and StepMom both had pretty bad flu after having shots, that is one of many reasons I have never had one - tap on the computer screen I've never had the flu either. That being said, I fully respect everyone's decisions regarding health care and their families. Ain't America great!

I got the seasonal, and I am encouraged to get the H1N1 because I am pregnant (27 weeks) --but, I am not going to do it.

Never taken a flu shot and don't see it in the near future. Spouse should probably get at least the seasonal flu shot, due to his multitude of health problems, but I am not beating my head against that wall.

I live in the area so it was on the news for several day. She was a Redskins cheerleader. They think that it was caused by the regular flu shot but they are not sure. Some of the problem can be corrected with surgery.

It was mandatory that all employees received the flu vaccine, unless one had egg allergies or religious reasons.

That story about the cheerleader is heartbreaking. So sad and there is no cure to alleviate her spasms.
I have never gotten a flu vaccine and do not ever intend to. Is it just a coincidence that so many end up getting the flu after receiving the vaccine?

I haven't watched that video, but did it imply that the vaccine caused her condition?

I read a newspaper article about her situation online the other day, and the quotes associating the vaccine with her condition were all speculation coming from her. There hadn't been any medical opinions showing there was a connection - she was basing her belief on the fact that her symptoms developed about a week to a week and a half after she received the vaccine.

The condition is rare, but it has existed since before this vaccine was created, so anyone who has acquired this disease in the past didn't get it from the vaccine.

Not to make light of it - it's extremely sad! I just wasn't convinced that the vaccine was to blame.

Last time I had the flu was 10 years ago after I had gotten a flu shot. I haven't gotten once since and don't plan too. We don't get them for the kids either.

That said, I got what we believe (doc didn't test) was H1N1 a few weeks ago. That shot isn't available here yet so why would I get one now since I've had it already? DH had it last weekend and now our son has it. My parents get the regular flu shot and so does my aunt and brother (diabetics).

Smurf, it went through our house as well. The first one to come down sick was our oldest DS, and we did have him tested. He was positive and did the Tamiflu. When Child #2 came down sick with the same symptoms 36 hours later we felt sure we knew what we were up against and got Tamiflu for him after talking to the Dr. over the phone. With a lot of illnesses we'd let things run their course, but one of our kids has a pre-existing condition that could've made it dangerous for him to have untreated H1N1. We needed to know what disease we were battling, specifically.

It's wild to consider that this all started from a single germ south of the border, huh?

I always get the regular flu shot and intend to this year . I won't be getting the H1N1 shot. Since my son had H1N1 in July, and he coughed all over me, I was definitely exposed and I'm not worried about getting it. H1N1 doesn't seem to be causing a lot of problems for us old folks anyway!

Not getting one ever again. I'm allergic to them, but I'm not allergic to eggs so go figure that.

Guess I'll just take my chances, I'm not in a high risk group.

Dh and one of our sn kids had the porky flu in the spring. Oldest dd is currently recovering from it. From what I've seen with our first 3 family cases, and 2 of these cases were high risk, I tend to side with no H1N1 vaccine. 3 of us have, however gotten our yearly flu shots (only 5 more to go!).
I think when I got to 5 or 6 kids I started getting flu shots after barely surviving a family bout of the flu. I realized at that point I'd rather drink hemlock if it meant trying to nurse a family with flu again when I was just as sick as the rest of the motley crew.
Oy.

I can so relate! My then 3 yr old ds and myself got the Type A influenza when I was a single mom at the time. I had a fever for five straight days. On the evening of the second day of my flu he came down with it. This is an ADHD kid that NEVER sat still. He came home from daycare and layed down in front of the tv and did not move a muscle for 2 hours. We were really sick. We spent a solid week in bed. I think we watched the Follow That Bird vhs tape about 8000 times! lol I remember gathering up enough strength to go make us some canned chicken noodle soup and then being exhausted after the effort. I ended up missing two weeks of work between my recovery and my sons. It's was really bad. I have gotten a flu shot every year since then (that's 22 years now). Maybe it was a really bad strain that year because it was awful. My sister dropped off some food and more 7-up at my door for me but otherwise I had no help and it's really hard to be that sick AND take care of others.

I also remember my virulent reaction to the oinker flu vaccine back in the mid-70's. I was in the military and had no choice but to take the shot. The side effects of that one shot made me *wish* I had the flu. I don't know why that particular vaccine sticks out in my mind, and I hope vaccine advances have been made since then, but I still get the willies when I hear of another swine flu vaccine. Purely anecdotical, mind you. I am not against vaccinations, per se, but am more careful than I was 30 years ago about this sorta stuff.

Now, how in the world does she "know" that she lost her hearing because of a flu shot

Even if a doctor actually told her that years ago, that doesn't mean it's actually true. You said she was "elderly" -- I wonder how many times she's repeated that story over the years and it probably isn't even true.

I get one every year. I do have a hearing loss! Hmmm...I wonder if it's the flu shot or the fact that my dad and two brothers also have a severe hearing impairment! LOL! Or...I can look at it this way. I already wear two hearing devices...the shot can't hurt me! HA HA. Honestly, I teach, and I just think the shot is an effective preventative for me. Everyone has to do what works for them!

My DH and I both got our first (and last) flu shot about 3 years ago and we were the sickest we'd ever been in our 35 years together! I got a horrible flu and then he caught it. Never again will I get a flu shot!!!

So my answer is NEITHER!!!

I already got the H!N! flu mist for myself and my 2 kids. I may not bother getting the regular one but with two kids I was going to make sure we got the H1N1. We have had no reactions what so ever. It was actually free from our health department. The flu has hit hard in our area and I didn't want to risk having us get sick.

I really hope that you will change your mind since this flu is really hard on pregnant women!

It takes a few weeks for flu shots to actually take effect so it is possible to get the flu right after getting the shot.

DH and I have gotten the flu shot and will get the H1N1 shot aso as we both have health issues.

DH and I both got our H1N1 shots last night!!!
No side effects............we are both just fine!!!

I have no issue with the regular flu shot, but I will not take the H1N1 until it goes into its second cycle.

I always get the flu shot. I work at an Elem schools and it's like ground zero for flu and it's free for us as school employees. The school district and the health dept are coming to each school in my county and giving the H1N1 nasal mist for kids, parents and employees and their families for free at EACH Broward County school. So, again, because of where I work, I'll probably get it, and I'll probably make my 19 yr olds get it too.

see....year before last, I got a "flu-like" virus. It wasn't the flu---I was tested. I had all the symptoms--high fever, body aches, upper respiratory/cough, thought I was going to die (and on a couple of nights I think I prayed to die...)
So, I don't know if the flu vaccine--normal or H1N1--is going to do a flipping thing.
Plus, I have a sensitivity to Thimerasol. Many years ago, when I first started wearing contacts, the disinfecting solution contained Thimerasol. I consistently had red streaks running down from my eyes, and a red rash in the palm of my left hand(where I'd rub my lenses). I'm hesitant to get the H1N1 because it's my understanding that the H1N1 has Thimerasol in it.

I got both...in 15 years in the health care field, I have never seen outbreaks like this one..
Thimerasol allergies is NOT a reason not to get it. In fact the amount is so small even those with the most severe allergy to it are doing fine....

I have never gotten the flu shot and won't be getting the H1N1 vax either. Instead I am boosting my families immune system(with what we eat and supplements) and have elderberry/boneset tinctures to help if we do get the swine flu.

No one in our family ever got the vax except our disabled dd. She had a lot of breathing problems and couldn't swallow her own secretions so the flu probably would have killed her.
She passed away last New Years Eve, but if she hadn't we would have gotten her both vax.
