Question Algebra homework assistance

My husband and I are trying to help one of our 7th graders w/her algebra homework and are experiencing senior moments. LOL

Any assistance would be appreciated in an explanation of finding the answers.
Thank you

Find the least common multiple of the monomials:
3S, S2(S squared)
X4 (X to the 4th power), X2( X squared)
15m2 (15m squared), 9m

Since it says least common mulitple, you have to find something they can each multiply to. The answers then are
a) 3s squared
b) x to the 4th
c) 45 m squared
d) 40 b squared

You are thinking least common FACTOR, but it asks for least common MULTIPLE, so these are not right.

Wink

Thank you all for your replies. It's amazing how we forget a concept that we don't use in everyday happenings. We all received different answers including my daughter. lol Will be interesting to see the correct answers when she returns from school.
Thanks again, have a pleasant day.

Looking forward to the answers for the homework. Last night, I read how do the problems and worked them out. I did not post the answers because I was not positive I was correct and did not want to mislead.

I always loved math. Can ya tell? >giggle<

Thank you all for your responses.....I only got 2/4 correct, whereas my daughter received 100%.

The answers are:

(Find the least common multiple of the monomials)
3S, S2(S squared).............. LCM= 3S cubed
X4 (X to the 4th power), X2( X squared).................LCM=X to the 4th
15m2 (15m squared), 9m..........................LCM=45m2 (45M squared)
8b, 20b2(20b squared) .......................LCM=40b2 (40b squared)

Have a great weekend.

Just goes to show that you really DON'T use a lot of the stuff you learn in school in everyday life.

Not that you shouldn't learn it, just don't hold your breath waiting to use it each day.

I think it's much more important to know how to find the answer than it is to have the answer, if you know what I mean.
