We've got an area next to the house and fence that has become a sort of dumping ground for garden stuff we might use "Some Day". I decided to straighten it up and when I picked up an old pot that a plant came in, this is what I found.
My first thought was coral snake.

but the more I looked at it the less likely that seemed. I finally came inside and checked a book I have about Florida wildlife and it appears to be a Corn Snake. And now everything you ever wanted to know about Corn Snakes from Wiki.
Quote:
The corn snake (Elaphe guttata), or red rat snake, is a North American species of rat snake that subdue their small prey with constriction.[1] The name “corn snake” comes from the fact that they have a maize-like pattern on their bellies and because they were found in corn fields. The Oxford English Dictionary cites this usage as far back as 1676. Corn snakes are found throughout the southeastern and central United States. Their docile nature, reluctance to bite, moderate adult size 1.2–1.8 metres (3.9–5.9 ft), attractive pattern, and comparatively simple care make them popular pet snakes. In the wild, they usually live around 15–20 years, but may live as long as 23 years in captivity.[2]
Like most rat snakes, corn snakes are non-venomous.

He/she has a really beautiful pattern and my best guesstimate is it's about 4 feet long.
I couldn't get a really good shot of its head but did get this.
Don't know if there's any connection but this is the first day since Sunday I haven't seen the hummingbird.
Anyway, it's still out there as far as I know. This place is like wild kingdom.
