At this age I like to buy kids something they will have for a while. A red wagon, an easel, or a pet come to mind. That is quite a bit of money. Maybe you can get them each a bike (even seconhand spruced up) and a toy also.

I agree with the dollar store. Crayons, paper, coloring books etc... Mine are 2 and 3 and they like playmobil. There have been some good deals at Target and Costco also has some nice deals on Playmobil.

At that age, IMHO, it is all about the anticipation and fun. I don't think my kids got anything other than yard sale stuff or stuff I would have bought anyway before they were 5.

I bought dollar stuff @ 99 cents only and am making a dress up box with dresses for my nieces. That cost me less than $18.00 per child!

My little angel boy is 3, and what's so funny is I want to go out and buy him everything I see (as if I really could)!! But at his age, he wouldn't know if I went and spent $40 at the dollar store versus $400 at Target!! But I just love him so much I want to get him everything I see. Which is odd, seeing as I have 2 daughters, 22 and 20, that aren't getting Santa Claus for the first time ever this year. I find myself wanting to spend money on the baby more than my daughters, who would know the difference!! It's just more fun when they are little!!

But with my budget this year, anything will be an extravagance. I am seriously nervous about gift giving, I have always went way overboard, but this year it's just not even possible. Anyone else in my boat???

Playmobil is a great toy line to get started on. You can add and build on it year after year. Target has those 2 figure blister packs that would be a great idea to get started with.

This won't work for this year, but you could do it next year..I always bought all these Halloween costumes when they were 90% off each year..Made them a dress up box..My kids are now 12 and still play around in it for fun..A couple of years ago I bought all these wigs and accessory items after halloween..They loved it..Cheap, lot of fun and last a long time..

I am not buying anything this year besides the dress up boxes for my 2 nieces. All other people are getting home made ornaments and cookies. I have noticed this is the first year I am really sticking to it and it feels so good not to have to go out and purchase!!

If you really can't afford anything this year for a small child go thru the things they used to play with and clean them up and put them away for christmas. You will be shocked that they have forgotten what they previouly had.

I read the post wrong I thought he meant he had $50-$70 to spend on each child.

I would also suggest the Dollar Tree. They have coloring books, crayons, water colors, paper, puzzles, books, workbooks, bubbles, bubble bath, comb & brush sets, barrettes/headbands, etc., candy for the stockings, they also have some DVD's and VHS tapes not sure of the selection for kids but I have purchased some before. When I was in there the other day they also had 3 packs/pairs of kids socks, hats, scarfs, mittens/gloves, purses, tote bags, stickers. Like everyone else said, at that age, they really don't remember what they got, just that they had presents to open. My opinion only, but this is the age where you have to take advantage of being able to get them less because the older they get, the more they seem to want. My DD is 14 and some of the things on her Christmas list are a laptop, IPOD, digital camera, DVD's, CD's, clothes, shoes (usually Nike), LOL. Which she already has a Zune and a digital camera but she wants different ones "cooler ones" LOL. Her list is 2 notebook pages long (so I have plenty of things to choose from) LOL. She still won't be getting the laptop, been on her list for 3 years now, LOL and we keep telling her maybe when you get in high school.

Hit the second hand stores and garage sales. You can get some really great things for very little and they will never know.

Are you friends with other people who have kids in your kids age range? If so, why not suggest having a "toy swap" and trade toys that the kids no longer play with. That would be a fun way to get some "new to them" stuff for the kids plus it can help give you ideas on the type of stuff to avoid buying because it doesn't hold the kids interest for very long.

We've had very lean Christmases before, and got lots of stuff from Dollar Tree, etc. My kids just loved having lots of presents to rip and tear open, so if you get a package of little plastic trucks, or 2-3 packs of something, or anything that has multiples, open the packages and wrap them individually, then they'll have more under the tree and more to open! Be thankful they're so young--the older mine have gotten, the more expensive their wants!! Good luck Merry Christmas

Mikeray, since you’re on a budget…have you thought of making homemade gifts?

I work with Domino Sugar and we have some neat gift ideas on our holiday website. Although your children are quite young, they still might enjoy receiving a Hot Chocolate Mix in a Jar or a personalized Baking Gift Certificate. You can visit Sweet Ideas from C&H® Sugar to see all the gift ideas. Hope this helps!

Was this a real question or an opportunity for the OP to include a link to some advertising?
