GPS advice?

I want to get a GPS for Christmas but don't know what to look for. I have heard that Garmin was ranked best by consumer reports and was told traffic updates were helpful. I really have no clue what to look for. Any advice would be very much appreciated.
TIA

Is this for a car-mounted or hand-held device? We have a Garmin hand-held one that we use for geocaching, and really like, but what you want is going to depend on what you're using it for.

I can say stay away from the GPS For Dummies it is well Dumb it has tried to constantly take me down roads that no longer exist, into fences and into buildings. I got mad at it and broke it and bought a Tom-Tom and its great and updates better than the Dummie ever did.
