Iowa snowstorm

Ok, all these weather alerts are starting to freak me out a bit. Calling this an "epic" storm and readying the National Guard in case they need to rescue stranded drivers. It's good to be prepared but it's getting kind of scary. Just worried about my kids getting to work ok and weather the power will hold up. I have a gas fireplace so I would be ok but it would still be kind of creepy. Any other Midwesterners getting anxious?

I hope that everything is okay and that you keep power. I hope your kids make it okay. This is set to be one of the coldest winters on record. I am thankful we don't get below zero and that right now there is no snow.
Do you have plenty of candles and water and food? It wouldn't hurt to have a radio and a book too if you can relax enough to concentrate on the book.

Just talked to my son and he and his wife have the next two days off work. Yippee! Yep, I always have supplies on hand. This is tornado country too! I'm prepped!

I just went outside on the porch and measured a spot- 6 1/2 inches so far. Right now it's fluffy and absolutely beautiful. I can see I-80 from my window and I looked out and saw a semi going by at a fair rate of speed and a pick-up truck also. I've seen them go a lot slower before. I can tell how bad the roads are just by looking out the window to see how fast the I-80 traffic is moving. I think it's the wind that will start up pretty soon that will wreck havoc. A true blizzard is so dangerous, not to mention the possibly of power outages. I will hate that if it happens!!

The storm is on its way to Maine. We are supposed to get hit hard today/tonight. Hard to believe that less than a week ago, we had temps in the 60s! I was utterly shocked that they cancelled school today (I was scheduled to sub, so I was watching for the cancellation, along with my daughter). Very rare, they usually don't cancel if it hasn't even started snowing yet. I think they are concerned that there will be icing on top of the 8-12 inches of snow!

Kathy, I am a few hours west of you and along I-80 as well. We are very much snowed in. No school yesterday or today. DH's offices are closed until at least noon today. Definitely a blizzard!

It was very windy last night and we got about 5 inches of snow, but now it's raining!! What a mess that's gonna create!! It's snowing30 miles north of us, doing nothing 30 miles south. I'm sure that means this rain will turn to snow soon. I heard that schools are closed statewide, but am not sure of that. (this turned out to be rumor!! lol some schools are closed though)

Yesterday I went and bought a bunch of stuff to bake with, so that's my "snow day" plans.

We were supposed to get HughesNet installed today, but I think it's unlikely to happen. He couldn't get in the driveway anyway!

It missed us. We got less that an inch, but it's colder than he$$ - 9 degrees and really windy. I don't know what the wind chill is. About 30 miles north they got 8-12 inches and were in a blizzard warning. There are a lot of schools out around us, but ours is open today. I kinda wish we would have gotten what they got up north! I love lots of snow and snow days - I just don't like the cold and the slushy crud that's all over the roads for the next week. I hope you all stay warm and safe!

Not much snow here. Winds are gusting around 50 mph and my thermometer outside says 12*. Which would make the wind chill about -15*. Bad week for our damn furnace to go out. We have someone coming out to look at it Friday, but chances are they'll have to order parts and who knows how long that will take.

we've got snow.
we've got brutal cold temps. Actual air temp (no wind chill) is -17 at this moment.
we're going to actual get in the positive numbers today, 10 above I think the weather said, HOWEVER---wind chill will kick it down to negative -10 or lower.

Got to love winter in Montana! (although it's a bit earlier than normal for such brutal cold!)

Winds are heavy, but the temperature is okay for now,28 degrees. It is supposed to drastically change though with the windchill being 16 below tomorrow. I'm not certain how much snow we'll get.

I dread to see my water and electric bill next month! Right now it's 19 here and for some reason my cat insists on going outside to run his kitty errands. I always worry his guts will freeze. My husband points out that the deer and other animals in the forest don't have frozen guts in the winter however I picture them all huddling together for warmth in a cave or a some sort of animal hut.
And I feel guilty like a sissylala for complaining when I read some of your posts here. Thank God I live on the West Coast I have never seen more than about 18 inches of snow here.

Neither rain, nor snow nor dark of night will keep the postman...............I guess this applys to robbers too!

CEDAR RAPIDS - Despite the blizzard outside, police say that the Check n’ Go at 353 Edgewood Rd NW was robbed on Wednesday at about 11:10 a.m.

Police say that two black males, one about 6’2” and the other 5’10”, both thin build, both wearing red hoodies, robbed the store. It is unknown the amount taken and no weapon was displayed.

The two left in a dark blue 4-door vehicle with red dealer plates. The vehicle is at least 10 years old. The vehicle was last seen northbound on Edgewood Rd.

Actually....many deer do not survive the cold winter. Between the cold and a lack of food, many die. Its sad, and everytime I complain to my dh about how much I hate hunting season, he reminds me that it helps to keep the heard down, so not as many die during the winter. I guess if I were a deer...I would want to take my chances in the cold, instead of dodging bullets!

Gotta vent!! Ok, I've gone out three times to try and shovel out the 3' plus snowbank at the end of my driveway from the snowplows. It's cold and I've been sick so I'm doing it in 15 minute intervals. Wind chill is minus 17 right now!!! Well, my young neighbor in his late 20's (we are a zero-lot line so we are attached) is out with his plow attachment to his riding mower doing his driveway while I am stuggling with mine. It took him minutes to plow out that huge bank of snow. Ya think he might want to spend one minute and help me finish mine as I'm standing out there coughing? Oh heck no! lol lol lol He is meticulous with his yard so every speck o snow will be completely off his. I'm just hoping to get a pathway out for my car before the snow gets crusty and even harder to shovel. If I had a plow I'd be plowing out everyones place but that's just me. I like helping people. Man my arms are aching already! I still love winter though!

Yippee! I went out again and the neighbor did take a few swipes of my driveway. He was still outside so I thanked him profusely. He didn't know my youngest was off at college. Maybe he will help me again if it gets this bad! I will leave them a can of popcorn at their door next time I'm able to go out shopping I did that the first Christmas for my immediate neighbors and they were the only ones that thanked me so they would probably like it again. I'm so happy now!!!!

Kathy, I know where you're coming from. The weather alerts are bothering me too. I haven't been out all day, but my DH just came back from checking everything out. He said the snow drifts were up to door handles on the car. We live in an apartment complex, and he had problems getting out of the parking lot because some of the other tenants decided to park in the driveway. It took him about an hour to get the car dug out and get out of the parking lot. He said the roads weren't really that bad though.

I have never seen 8 inches if snow much less the kinda snow you folks are dealing with. I always tell people to BELIEVE everything bad you hear about Alabama, but the worst snow storm I have ever been thru was when I was 5. So far IF, and that is a big IF we get any snow it is off the roads before the end of the first day and usually only any left in shady spots everywhere else. They gave snow for last saturday morning, we got it, I let one of the cats out at 8 am and the world outside was solid white. When I let the next cat out at 9 there was only snow in the shade. I like to see snow and play in it, but I like it gone before the end of the day.

All that babbling said, be my luck we will have a blizzard this winter and you can bet if we do, long as I have electricity I will be on here howling at the top of my lungs!
