I have not received a Christmas bonus since 2002. This is the first Christmas in years I was unemployed however in my five and half years at my last job I never received a Christmas bonus.
My husband works for the state so of course no bonus, no raises, and mandatory 13 days of unpaid leave a year.
A couple of years ago Sacred Heart built a new hospital that cost millions and millions of dollars in the community. The cheap b@$t@rd$ gave their employees a hardbound book of the history of the hospital for their Christmas bonus. I have never heard so many people complain.
Companies are getting cheaper and cheaper and it's not just the economy. It's been a trend for the last few years to not have bonuses or Holiday parties. It's really sad because I know Joe CEO still probably gets his.

We get quarterly bonuses as long as the company is doing well. I've worked there for 3 years and have always gotten a bonus. So, I won't get a "Christmas" bonus per se, but if things go like the previous 3 quarters, I'll get one at the end of December.

I work Retail. Our Managers get a bonus but nothing for us lowly Associates ;-) DH doesn't get one - he's lucky to be working 5 days a week (they'll probably go back to 3 days after the first of the year :-( We just figure he's lucky to have a job. One of my DD's gets a bonus since she's Management, not sure about my other DD who is a Manager at McDonalds.

Last Christmas was the first time in 15 yrs that DH hadn't received a bonus. DH's bonus was always tied to his salary and he was guaranteed to make $XX a year and if he didn't he would receive the rest of his salary as bonus. Funny, I seriously doubt that DH will receive a $20,000 bonus. Word was they were going to be off only one week at Christmas, now it's two plus two in January. Also, no holiday pay for Christmas or New Years (4 days). As of this week DH has worked the past 6 wks. First time this has happened in 16 months.
Another board that I frequent, there's a woman poster complaining that she's got to work the whole day Saturday (overtime). There's a lot of unemployed/underemployed people out there that would love a chance to work just 40 hrs a week.

No bonus for teachers BUT our principal purchased every classroom a LCD projector and a document camera to use. I'm happy with that.

No bonus here either only a raise every year and because I am kindergarten paraprofessional I do get alot of gifts from the parents of the children in our class and I do receive a lovely gift card from the teacher I work with once at christmas time and once again at the end of year . We also all us Kindergarten para's also do a secret santa and we limit the gift to 20.00 each and plus everyone will bring in something to eat or drink to share. Hubby gets a bonus every year however it comes from his family business which his dad hands out and determines how much it will be and I thank God everyday his business is doing well in this economical times. Peace to all in the holiday season 09. Catherine

First year since I started working at the company in 2002 that we aren't getting a bonus. An employee made an error that cost our company $100,000.00 and since it's a small, family business they can't afford a bonus this year for anyone. I think there are about 42 of us.

I have worked in the same hospital for past 8 years. This is the first year EVER that no one, hospital wide , even got a raise for the year. I'm thinking the big wigs did though.

Not only that, we used to get a Christmas bonus, along with a turkey at Thanksgiving. Guess what? Last year and this year , nothing. It has really affected morale among everyone, from the janitors to the nurses. It makes you feel so unappreciated.

I see no one has told you how much, I wouldn't either. I don't understand why you need to know how it was given, are you checking up on your dh?

As a new employee, I would never, ever expect it. Many bonuses are tied to the productivity and profitability of the company over the past year. It simply is given at a jolly time of the year and then becomes expected.

I would never count on a bonus to supplement my shopping all over town, I would consider it a plus and use it wisely if it did happen.

There has not been a bonus at the end of the year for at least 5 or 6 years. Plus this year all the employees were told the end of Aug. that they would no longer be paid for their unused sick leave. They have been paid for their unused sick leave for 20 plus years so this has hurt a lot of people this Christmas.

DH & I don't get Chrismas bonuses but we do get one during the year (DH in Feb, Me in April). I doubt I'll see one for 2009 since it has been a dismal year. In the past years we've received gift cards at Thanksgiving - not even that this year. No Christmas party - I'm just glad to have a job.

I get a bonus every year...have since I started here 19 years ago. We get it in a paycheck (which I handle since I'm the payroll person ) so I talked the bosses into paying the bonuses on the 14th when I do payroll....told them the employees have to have some time to shop. Normally we do direct deposit for all payrolls, but for the Christmas bonuses I'm cutting an actual check...otherwise they wouldn't get their money until the 18th.

Dh on the other hand, his Christmas bonus each year is a ham (which after we cut makes 3 dinners plus I have enough to slice thin for sammies). Better than nuttin' I guess.

I have been working at this place for just over a year. Last year, we got a small bonus check sent in our Christmas cards that were mailed to our homes after we had gone to "winter break". I was very appreciative (sp?) and used it to splurge for my whole family. This year, I am not sure if we are getting a bonus. I am happy to be employeed and excited that we will get a raise on our first check in January.

I see a bonus as a tip like a server in a restaurant receives. For many people a bonus is a thank you for a job well done.
I know for my DH it was not extra, it was part of his salary.

I am also a state employee and received the same as your DH, no raise, no bonus and mandatory furlough days BUT in July we will get an additional 7 days that we can take off, which I think is pointless since we already get 30 days off a year not counting our paid holidays. This year alone I will be rolling over about 10 days because I didn't take them and won't be taking them by the 31st.

I think every employer is different, and without telling us where your DH is working, asking everyone else if they get a bonus or not is pointless. What one company/employer does has no relevance to any other employer.

My DH usually receives a $15-$20K bonus. It is based on many factors throughout the year.

I would not expect your DH to get a bonus, tho, if he is just starting out at a new job. I don't consider a gift to be the same as a bonus, and hopefully in the spirit of the holiday he will recieve a "gift". I guess you'll have to wait it out and see.

You know? I'm just thankful for my job and the wonderful salary I get paid. My job allows me the flexibility to come and go as needed (Drs. appt, kids' school functions, etc.). I receive almost 3 weeks of PTO/vacation/sick time.

Last year, NO ONE in our company r'cd a raise (from the CEO on down)--however, because we have saved our clients money, we've taken on new clients and retained the old clients, we should be receiving a raise in April.
I'm good with that.
Further, it's none of your business how much anyone gets as bonus--and it's rude to ask!

If it truly bothered anyone to be asked that question all you had to so was simply skip over the post again why why so rude???.I have stated before I would never ever discuss two issues on this post which is my financial suituation and sex those too issues are extremely personal to me . However again no one admitted anymoney except for one person and again like so many others so if it offended you perhaps sent a personal message no need in these hard economical times and the holidays to be rude . I gotta agree with ya. I didn't think it was a rude thread. I'm actually kind of glad for the thread because now I know our office isn't the only one not getting one this year. I wouldn't tell how much mine would have been (not much, we are only talking a few hundred bucks tops) but that's for each person to decide.

I don't know how anyone misconstrued this to be a rude post. She was just wondering about something, and thought she could get a general concensus here (NOT).

I know all of us at my hospital have wondered the same thing, are others getting Christmas bonuses, or it just us?? I am actually surprised by how many that aren't, and I'm glad it's NOT just us!! Not that I want anyone else to do without, but it helps to know you haven't been singled out.

I got a $10.00 thank you to the store I work in.

They have alleviated the quarterly bonuses for people in the accounting position.

Well, as a teacher, we don't get an actual bonus, but...we get extras a lot for different things. I am getting a pretty decent amount twice a year for three years for agreeing to stay in my parish, as there is a high need. We get a raise each year, as well. I got another chunk this year for agreeing to attend a few workshops.

With having the summer off, a week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for CHRISTmas, a week for spring break, the days for Mardi Gras and other days we get off, I will never complain!I We get a lot of time off!

My husband has worked at a community college for nine years now, he has never gotten a bonus.
He does get about two weeks paid off at Christmas so I guess that's good. If I really wanted him hanging around the house for two weeks that is

I think it would be quite odd to "guarantee" a bonus as part of the salary. If it was a truly a guarantee that you have in writing, then I think you should go after it.

In the company I work for, bonuses are partof our pay structure - from the entry-level factory worker to the CEO. Bonus targets are subject to a multiplier that is determined by some crazy formula that is a function of company profit and achieving milestones set forth in the beginning of the year. The multiplier can be 1.5, 2, 3.2, etc..but it could also be 0 in a bad year (although that hasn't happened to my knowledge). These cavaets are written down on our pay letter. I wouldn't be surprised if your husband's bonus was similar.

Because the bonus is based on yearly results, it is not paid until those results are complete for the year....sometime in Feb or Mar

And personally, I think it's somewhat uncouth to ask (and answer) how much a bonus amount is unless it's something trivial.....

Also, not wanting a large bonus so you don't have to pay taxes on it is kinda silly.

My company like the post above gives a bonus that is tied to some crazy formula about customer retention & several other things I don't quite understand. They come up with a number & they multiply that # (between 0 & 2) by a number that is tied to our position (the higher your position the higher your multiplier is). This year I will end up with a bonus - I'm pretty excited about it since I figured this year would be close to 0. I get it in the form of a paycheck which they take taxes out of.
I don't know if my DH's company will give him a bonus or not. The first couple years they gave him one in the paycheck closest to Christmas. One year they gave him a nice winter coat with the company name on it. One year they gave us a gift certificate to honey baked ham.
I think it's nice to be remembered at the end of the year even if all the company can do is a thank you card.

We get our unused sick time doubled as our bonus. I used one sick day the whole year as I usually do. My question is this....last year the figure I came up with wasn't the same that I received. Do I mention something should it happen again? It is written policy that you get your sick leave pay double as year end bonus. Or should I be grateful that I have a bonus, much less a job? Any opinions? Reviews are on Wed!

You can ask in a way that is not nasty or negative or accusatory. Maybe even blame yourself. "I thought I kept correct records but I must have missed something. May I compare my notes to the official record? My check is not for the amount I had figured out. Maybe I'm calculating wrong. Would you mind going over it with me when you have time?" The payroll person should want to help you with this.

Did you remember to take taxes into account? Like the previous poster said, ask them nicely to go over how it is calculated.

Yep, took taxes into account as well. Our office is small...payroll is basically the attny or his wife; just don't know how far to push it..another thing, it's given to us into a Christmas card after performance reviews, I haven't opened the card in front of him before, I usually take it back to my office and open it there.

Thanks for the suggestions!
