No we see it here too and indeed Luke Wilson says Lake City FL where the bikini was invented. They name all the places everywhere the commercial shows the point being that they have coverage all over the country. I don't think it would have the same impact if they only mentioned local places in each region as they are saying there is nationwide coverage. I bet they paid Luke a fortune to do the commercial.

I read AT&T's ad is in response to Verizon's ad "“There’s a Map For That.” VZW's commerical compares data coverage between the two carriers. I like the ad because he says "Bozeman, Montana" and I'm from Montana.

Well, isn't that something? So he DOES say Lake City, hunh? I just assumed this was one of those commercials where they could tailor it to your location. Humph. I am just surprised now! Who knew Lake City was so popular, hahah! Birthplace of the bikini, huh? How come I've never heard THAT before? LOL

Little something about the bikini from wikipedia: The modern bikini was invented by French engineer Louis Réard in 1946. He named it after Bikini Atoll in the Pacific, the site of the Operation Crossroads nuclear weapon tests in July that year. The reasoning was that the burst of excitement created by it would be like a nuclear device. The monokini, a bikini variant, is a back formation from bikini, interpreting the first syllable as the Latin prefix bi- meaning "two" or "doubled", and substituting for it mono- meaning "one".[3] Jacques Heim called his bikini precursor the Atome, named for its size, and Louis Réard claimed to have "split the Atome" to make it smaller.

| Lake City Reporter > Archives > News > AT&T promo's bikini boast AT&T promo's bikini boast Commercial says Lake City is home to the bikini. By ANTONIA ROBINSON arobinson@lakecityreporter.com Published: Friday, December 4, 2009 6:09 AM EST Lake City has gained some notoriety nationwide for an inaccurate comment. The invention of the bikini was recently attributed to Lake City in a new AT&T commercial featuring Luke Wilson, an American actor. During the 30-second commercial, Wilson appeared on a large U.S. map and randomly threw out postcards to various cities covered by AT&T. “Lake City, Florida, where the bikini was invented,” he said. However, the modern bikini’s invention is actually attributed to French engineer Louis Réard in 1946 and was named after the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. The bikini is even said to date as far back as antiquity in the Greco-Roman world. Viewers are not expected to take the commercial literally, an AT&T official said. “The intent of the TV spot is light-hearted humor, not necessarily historical fact,” said Kelly Layne Starling, AT&T public relations manager for South and West Florida.

I think Lake City is a small town, but my DH says it is HUGE< hahahha. Of course, he hates cities. I'm not sure how many people actually live here, but if you ask me, this is NOT a big city at all. We do have quite a few lakes though, but believe me, they are nothing you'd want to swim in. However, this ares is known for it's beautiful springheads. Still, it's pretty amazing they even mentioned us. ;-) Thanks for all the help, you guys! |
