Electronic car keys

The day after xmas, my mom and I stopped at a gas station so I could pump some gas into her car at the pump with my credit card. I don't know why she got out of the car, but when she did, she shut the door, and locked us out of her car! It is a Mazda and has a key that has buttons on it you can use to unlock and lock the doors; it goes BEEP! BEEP!, very annoying! Somehow,. it locked us out the other day. The key was still in the ignition, but she'd pulled it out slightly, so the bing-bonging would quit because the door was open. Anyways, she shut the door anyhow, and BAM, locked out! Purses, cellphones, my jacket, everything, in the car. I had to wait there for 2 hours while she got a ride home and hunted down the spare key, AFTER she hunted down the hidden spare just to get into the house! What a crappy day!

Anyhow, got us to wondering about those electronic keys--- do they have a battery in them? Not that THAT was the problem, but we were just wondering....

Yes, they have a battery. I have no idea why it would lock automatically, though. That's really weird. I hope it wasn't too cold a wait for you.

Thanks, Renee'! Yes, it was pretty cold, but at least I had my credit card, so I bought some coffee and patiently waited, LOL.

the remote locked the doors because your mom pulled keys ouut of the ignition switch so after 30 seconds the remote automatically locks the doors and rest the alarm

It's not the key remote that locks you out. It's the vehicle security system that locks you out. As someone else pointed out, you left the keys in the ignition and got out of the car. The system senses this and locks the doors to keep someone from stealing the car because the keys were left in the ignition. The locking happens so quickly that you don't have time to say "Oh crap!!" while grabbing for the door handle.

WOW, thanks, you guys! We had no idea. This is the first time mom has had a car with an electronic lock. And I'm legally blind, so I've never been able to drive. I will make sure to tell her about this. We sure don't want to get locked out again! Thanks so much for your help, everybody!

you should have your mom ask the dealer or person who installed vechile security system where the kill switch is so incase she needs to disarm alarm for some reason she can kill(turn alarm off) and re-arm alarm. Also, the doors will automatically lock with keys in hand if alarm button is not pressed after entering/leaving the car.

Are you sure about that? Have you ever left your keys in the ignition and got out and shut the door? We have Chevy vehicles.

There is no turning off the vehicle security system on our Chevy vehicles. Also, the doors will not lock on their own unless the keys are left in the ignition.

I've got a Hyundai and it doesn't lock when the keys are in the ignition. You have to push the door lock or lock it with the key.
