Smile Speaking of Kittens

My regular computer died on Christmas day. So I've been using another one that's older than dirt while the good one is in the shop being fixed. I came across some photos I'd forgotten about. From 2001 to 2003 we were blessed to have 4 different litters of kittens. Three of them were from stray cats that found their way to my house and the 4th set was from my husband's daughter's cat.

This is the first litter. Up until then I had never had kittens in the house because we always had our cats spayed and neutered. This was a real thrill. The mother cat had found a way up into our attic through a hole in our garage. She decided to move the babies out of there on an extremely hot July morning. I was near a window and heard the kittens screaming as she carried them near the front of our house.

I found her and 3 of the kittens right away and brought them inside. Then I went back out and found a 4th one. At that time a thunderstorm was rolling in so, thinking I had them all, I went inside and checked out our new family. By the time the storm was over, it was twilight but something made me go out and check just one more time. Imagine my horror when I heard a the cries of another baby.

Then the great search began. I looked high and low. I crawled on the muddy ground searching under every bush along the front of the house. No kitten. What was strange was the cries were the loudest when I was standing up. Finally I looked up and realized the kitten was still in the attic.

Up we went and I crawled through the insulation (Not recommended) as far as the space would let me. The very edge of the house only had a clearance of about 6 inches. There was no way I could reach this kitten. So I called to my husband who was outside to pull the board away from the overhang. He did and the last kitten fell right into his arms. I must say that never in my adult life have I been dirtier than I was after that experience.

All the kittens were adopted and we still have Mom. Here's Little Spooky and her babies.

In 2002 a very friendly female tiger started hanging around our house. I named her Dee Dee because she resembled another stray we had named Dad. I figured this was his daughter = daughter of dad = DD = Dee Dee. Never mind.

Anyway, she disappeared for about a week and we started looking for her. I went to the street behind us and one of the neighbors asked me if I was looking for a grey tiger. When I said yes, she told me the cat had had a litter of kittens under a bush. They were just going to leave them there to get killed by dogs or who knows what else. What the hell is the matter with people?? Call the shelter if you can't take them in. We brought them home. All the kitten and their mom got adopted.

Here's Dee Dee and her babies.

Just over a week old.

When Dee Dee's kittens were about 2 weeks old, the neighbor who told me where they were came over to our house. In her hands was the sickest looking kitten I've ever seen. She told me she found it walking up the middle of their street. Too young to eat solids but about a week older than Dee Dee's kitten, I saw weeks of bottle feeding this poor thing if it made it at all. Then I thought of Dee Dee. Would she take it in as one of her own?

I cleaned up our new addition the best I could. He was crawling with fleas. Then I brought him into her. At first she hissed and growled at him. The poor kitten just hung his head. I took him out and waited for her to nurse her own kittens, hoping she wouldn't notice one more.

A short time later I looked in and she was feeding so I brought him back. This time she only glared at him so I positioned him at her tummy and she laid back and relaxed. The orphan kitten had a new Mom. We kept him and named him Buddy.

Dee Dee's kittens in the front and Buddy in the back.

All the kittens with their Mom.

5 weeks old.

One of Dee Dee's kitten with Rusty.

It was also at this time the neighbors from Hell who lived behind us got evicted. Most, if not all of the strays we took in were because they let their cats breed endlessly.

A knock on the door one Sunday and the husband had a beautiful black and white kitten in his hands. He said.. Do you want this? I said not really, have you tried the shelter and he came back with they're not open on Sunday. These people were nut jobs and I pictured him doing something really bad to this cat if I didn't take it so in it came. The next day I took it to the Vet and found out one of its legs was broken. Because of that, we called him Legs.

All the kittens got along great!

That was the summer of 2002. I thought I was done with kittens. I wasn't.

Just encase I haven't posted it evertime there is a post about cats, I absolutlely love them. I currently have 5, the most grown cats I have ever had were 7, but three of the older ones died at 17 and 18 yrs old, and then I rescued another little starving darling. All mine have been fixed, but the next to last one I rescued, I found her during a particularly difficult time in my life and for what ever stupid thing was going on in my head at the time she didn't make it to the vet in time. I was walking to the barn late one afternoon and she walked up beside me and I realized what was about to happen, no fault of hers, my own stupiditly. When she had them she hid them until their eyes were open and I just feel in love. There were 4 and I told hubby that I would keep two, and find the others and the mom a new home, so we could get the two keepers fixed. Well, he watced me playing with them as they were getting old enough to wean, and finally handed me the checkbook and told me to just keep all of them. I did find the mom a good home. I really felt guilty spending that much money on them, as I realize there are people that doen't have that kinda money to spend on food in a month, I also realized that is why I wind up with them in the first place is in this area they don't fix them and then when the inevitable happens they are tossed out or worse. Worse in point the last one I found had, had her ears burned and her tail broken and had been starved. I could sit her in the palm of my hand and still see hand all the way around her, and when I took her to the vet he said she was over a year old - what some people will do to animals. There is no truer love than what an animal gives freely. I keep hoping I wont run across another tossed out one, but I know full well, they if I do they have a new home.

It is so good to read the stories here of others that love and take care of the animals. Thanks ladies.

Oh they are all to adorable. We have one now that we got from my manager and what a little love bug she is. I think I would be the crazy cat (or dog) lady if possible. I grew up on a farm and I love them all. Too bad we live in an apartment or I would definitely have more!

You know how much I love my little kitten! She is such a sweetheart! Here's the newest pic of her and my lab Scout. I actually made this pic into my Christmas card this year.

And here is Mandy in the manger, the girls and I were setting up decorations one day and found her in there.

Finally the day came when Dee Dee and all of the kittens had been adopted. While I was glad they got forever homes, I cried a little every time one went out the door.

That Fall I had a trip planned to Disney World. I would be leaving first and my husband would join me several days later. The night before he was to come down, I received a phone call from him. His 21 year old daughter had been in a terrible car accident and she was in critical condition. There was no way he could join me. I offered to come back but he told me to stay so I did.

When he went to see her, he stopped by her apartment and found a small gray cat with a new litter of kittens. With no one to feed or take care of them, there was only one solution. Bring them back to our house.

The mother cat's name is Prissy and she had 4 of the most beautiful kittens I've ever seen.

My husband's daughter eventually healed but felt Prissy was better off with us so we kept her. She's still here although her days are numbered. She was diagnosed with mammary tumors about 6 months ago.

I felt that surely that was it for kittens. As things turned out, there was one more event yet to come.
