Happy New Year! NOT!!!!

My 22 y/o daughter's car was stolen out of our driveway last night. She's here visiting from school for the holidays. It's an old car too! A '99 Honda Civic that is basically a POS! I guess someone needed parts or something.....geez.

The problem now is how to get her back to college that is 4.5 hours away!

Sorry to hear that. I have read many times that Hondas are one of the most stolen cars in the US. I hope she has full coverage insurance and I suggest using a Club. I use mine when I park in malls, etc. I hope it's found they often are just stolen and driven somewhere and parked. Good Luck.

That really sucks! Civics are stolen regularly due to their popularity and the need for parts. It's so sad that people resort to stealing...hopefully she's fully insured and can get a new car to get her to school

That's rotten!! So sorry to hear that and I know what a bind that puts you into. Especially since the car is older I seriously doubt that you were carrying full coverage insurance on it. Actually, I don't think an insurance company would place full coverage on a vehicle that is 10 yrs old.

Well, she does have comp on it, so we're keeping our fingers crossed! We are waiting for an adjuster to call her. Hopefully the fact that it's a Holiday weekend won't screw her up too much. She WAS supposed to leave tomorrow to go back to school. I have no idea what we're gonna do.

I can't even rent her a car to go home in, because she's under 25.....

Hopefully the adjuster calls soon

OP there ARE some large companies who rent cars to someone her age if you have to do that.

My son has rented several times from Thrifty, Avis and Budget, he and his friends are all 21-22 years old, they had to pay extra, about $25/day. Other companies we got quotes from and said they would cover 21-year olds (also for extra daily charges) were Dollar, National, Enterprise.

This is from Thrifty's website -
Q: How old do I have to be to rent a vehicle?

A: All renters must be aged at 21+ years for standard vehicles, at the commencement of the rental. You must be aged 25+ years for specialty vehicles such as a BMW.

For any driver be they the renter or an additional driver, aged 21 to 24 inclusive, an age surcharge of $16.50 per day applies.

This is from the Avis website:

3. What are the age requirements for renting? Is there an underage surcharge?
Avis rents to customers between the ages of 21-24 with a valid credit card and driver's license. At time of rental, we will automatically apply an additional $27-per-day underage surcharge in the US and $35 per day in Canada for these drivers. (See exceptions) MI/NY/DC

Anyway, good luck either way, hope the car is returned!

Ugh!! That really sucks!!

A few years ago my best friend's jeep was stolen on Christmas eve. They were visiting In-laws. Her husband went out and loaded the presents in the jeep then came in to get the kids. When they went back out the jeep was gone. About a month later the cops found it. The jeep needed about $300 worth of work to run again and of course all the presents were gone and it looked crappier than before it was taken.

For $200 you could probably pay a friend from school to come pick her up. Probably even less, really.

We can send her back via Amtrak, but she has SO much stuff that it would be a real pain. The insurance co said it's about a 30 day settlement window, so I have no clue what we're gonna do. Hubby has an old El Camino that he's been waiting for an excuse to put on the road, so we may send her back with his GMC Jimmy for now and he can drive his new/old toy.

Sounds like a win/win situation! (other than the theft of course)

Just curious if her car has been found? What a crummy thing to happen and in your own driveway....that would really bug the heck out of me.....is your neighborhood normally safe?

Nope, that sucker is parted out to God knows how many places. DH gave her his Jimmy to drive back to college. He has an MG or two around as restoration projects and he's gonna drive that for awhile until she gets settled with the insurance (could be a month). He's a good Dad...I wasn't gonna give her MY car! LOL

And yes, for the most part our neighborhood is generally safe. We've lived in the same house going on 24 years, and the area, while suburban is pretty quiet. We are in Fort Lauderdale though, and to be honest, we've had a crop of "pain clinics" popping up around the area, which seems to have led to more burglaries in the area. The cop said not car thefts though.....go figure.

Sorry this happened to your daughter. Just wondering.... if she's like a lot of young people, they're so trusting .. they leave the keys in the car, their purses in the car, the doors unlocked. I know my daughter-in-law still does that sometimes and I tell her to stop trusting people so much! Hope everything works out.

DD called, and they found her car in Miami. It has damage to the steering column, the center console, no radio and no battery. I wish they hadn't found it because now we have to deal with the insurance co, and she's back in school, and we're here.

Everything is in her name only, and she's in school full time. It should be a total cluster fruck to get the car returned and repaired since she's not here. We had her sign power of attorney, but I'm sure it's still gonna be a CF.

So, the car wasn't parted out? I'm really surprised as that's usually why those Hondas are stolen. I don't know which state you live in, but how far is Miami from where you are?
I agree with you, things just might have been easier if the car were never found. Now, you or your daughter will incur more expenses getting the car back to where you live, right? Not right!

They could have had the common decency to destroy it or push it off the side of a cliff or something. That totally sucks!

Miami is about 1/2 hour south of us, it's where people dump cars....lol. We have to go down and get it, and then the insurance will reimburse as part of the settlement. As of right now it has the towing & two days (will be 3 days) storage.

We have to pay another tow company to go down to get it with DH along with all kids of Power of Attorney paperwork, copies of her drivers license...etc etc etc. It's SUCH a hassle for us! DD is snug as a bug with her Dad's truck up at college. Isn't it great to have Mom & Dad take care of things for ya??!!

I agree it would have be SO much better if they had parted it out and destroyed it.

LOL, nah. The adjuster was just here and took lots of pictures. He said that we should hear in about a week or so as to whether they will repair the damage or just total the car. What a PITA.
