low carb - anybody doing this

I'm going to try low carbing again starting Monday when I have to go back to work after being on vacation.

Actually, my doctor originally suggested that I try low carb and it is the only thing that has ever worked for me. I lost about 35 lbs a couple of years ago so I know it works.

DH's doctor at the VA has also told him that he absolutely must cut way back on carbs.

Unfortunately, since I don't like eggs or a lot of green vegetables and don't really love salads, it's not as easy for me as it is for most people. I can give up the sugar easier than the starch (I love bread and potatoes )

But I am really going to give it my best shot since I need to get some of this weight off this year.

Anybody else doing low carb? I know susiecat is and I would love some encouragement from her, e.g. what are your favorite low carb tips? I am so thankful that the low carb Heinz ketchup is available again.

I'll be starting tomorrow.....she says while eating a big plate of leftover homemade macaroni and cheese.

I want to lose 10lbs in two weeks...and South Beach Phase 1 is the only way that I know how to do that....

I'm also getting more serious about my Curves membership, too. I've been going for about 5 years now and I go in spurts: I'll go 3 or 4 times a week, then I'll go once or twice a week

I'm aiming for 4-5 times a week. I go at 6:30 before work so it's hard sometimes, especially in the winter. There are only a couple of women who go that early and they're not especially sociable so the time really goes by slowly.

I normally work out in the morning too. We have a fitness center at work, so I go to work dressed for that and unshowered. That way, I have to do my workout and shower or I can't go to the office.

I haven't done low carb but my parents have and they have a sweet tooth. They love Big Train low carb peanut butter cookie mix and brownie mixes.

Good luck and take care of yourself. I am not a fan of low carb diets unless you keep it as a lifestyle and use balance. My parents did it, lost a ton of weight (over 30 lbs each) and then stopped and gained it all back plus some

Really 10lbs in 2 weeks. Yay!! Thanks. I really just want to lose 10lbs. I've never dieted before. How do you maintain it so it stays off? Do you continue eating the South Beach diet? Thanks for the tip. I'm off to Google "South Beach."

I have a really hard time on South Beach, but I went to Target today and stocked up on Fiber enriched foods. I got progresso soup (eat 1/2 can for lunch)+ other things like a salad with greens, red onion, cucumber and fat free balsamic viniagrette topped with chicken. You can also have about 20 peanuts. That kind of lunch fills me up!

Anyways I bought:
fiber one yogurt, granola bars, honey cereal, progresso soup, and all bran crackers. All have lots of fiber which will curb your hunger. A couple of years ago I did nutrisystem and the weight just fell off me. I am going to follow the same type of eating without the price of the food.

I went to work out with the trainer on Tues and did hundreds of lunges, and Wii fit for an hour on Thurs and Fri. Doing it again today and gym tomorrow!

I don't specifically do low carb. However about five years ago I really started reading labels and educating myself about food and that is when I cut the sugar out as well as the enriched flours. Which is not to say I NEVER eat a piece of bread or cake but I feel alot better than I used to. I also don't eat anything with HFCS (I know we've talked about that before).
I have found that what works best for me is eating unprocessed foods by buying raw ingredients and making the food myself. Also moving alot and with purpose has changed my body as well as my energy level. And Pilates and weight training.

I wish I were better at staying away from processed foods. I am trying. I love bread, and it is my biggest challange. I do not eat white bread at all, and stick with 100% whole grain. I love whole wheat wraps, with turkey and lots of veggies! I did South Beach years ago and lost about 20lbs. Once Phase one was over, I had an easier time staying with it. Phase one drove me nuts (no bread).

Let me see.. I think my best low carb tip is.. for the first 2 to 3 weeks have very low carb. This will help so much with cravings for the starches you love. I started in Oct '09 and the first month I ate mostly meat and fat only veg I had was romaine lettuce (I'm not a big salad fan either). Make sure you get in a lot of fat! Fat helps you feel full and satisfied. I lost about 20lbs in Oct. in Nov I experimented and gained some back... I tried adding fruit (low GI berries) too soon.. that was naughty of me. I am now back on meat/fat and losing again. Don't do dairy or very little dairy. Dairy will make you gain, it's so easy to over do on cheese *drool*.
I think it's great that your Dr approves of low carb. My Dr is pro low fat.. YIKES! Of course she is skin and bones, but i swear she's not the healthiest looking person I have ever seen.

It's nice to know others here are also low carb.. except for Anna and her darn apples :P

I've never really been "on" any diet, but have always eaten fairly low carb. I probably still eat more carbs than are recommended for a strict low carb diet. I don't really like soda, or sugary things like candy, cake or cookies (I'm allergic to chocolate). I get a craving for them every now and then, usually around that time of the month.
I usually buy whole grain when possible. It has more taste, better texture. White bread and pasta just taste gooey (?) to me. I do eat fruit and "carby" veggies like corn and carrots.

I could never do a low fat diet. I'm love meat and dairy. I tried to cut out (or cut down on) milk awhile back, because my friend kept sending me info on how bad it was . So I gave it a try. No go.

I've done low carb. My body does so much better and I feel so much better when I eat low carb.
I plan to get back on a lower carb eating plan as soon as I go tt the ggrocery, in a few days.

I think you need to experience with things. I know some people can eat small amounts of fruit or grains and not gain. I can't. Luckily I can eat dairy and not gain because I love cheese!

I usually eat the same dinner as my family but I don't eat the starch. So this way I don't have to make meals for them and then meals for me.

I use a low-carb diet to kick-start my diet. Then I slowly introduce carbs. It's worked well for me.

Lean lunch Meat (turkey, chicken, lean baked ham)

Cheese including Cream Cheese -

Once you go through the 1st week of NO sugar (even artificial) a good treat is to whip a pkg of cream cheese with some sweetened sugar-free koolaid powder (you add however much you want)

The trick is to whip the heck out of it so it gets really fluffy.

Also, after the 1st week to 10 days you can add berries. Strawberries, raspberries.

Good luck - make sure you eat frequently and keep track of your calories. If you over do it on the calories you will make no head-way.

Thought of something else - Pepperoni - place slices on a plate, cover with a paper towel and microwave them. Depending on your microwave and how many slices you have on the plate, it can take 2-5 minutes. The paper towel soaks up the grease, so it really cuts down on the calories and they are a nice crunchy snack.

Another good crunchy snack is to spread grated cheese, nothing else...just cheese, in a small frying pan and cook on a low to med heat - turn after the edges get lighter in color and cook till crisp. Again, take the paper towel and soak up the grease (I do this off and on while it cooks) - when the cheese is stiff and golden brown - take out of pan - there is a fine line between burnt and crispy, so really watch it when it's almost done - then break into chips.

My husband and I went on it back in April and we both lost around 30 lbs. and we were never hungry. It's a good idea to keep lots of low carb snacks handy so you don't get tempted to cheat. We liked nuts, cheese, sugar free jello with whipped topping, and sliced veggies with dip, sugar free popsicles and fudgesicles A good snack is to take some sliced ham or salami, spread with cream cheese, top with a dill pickle spear, roll up and slice. When my sweet tooth got the best of me I'd take a cup of frozen mixed topping and sprinkle some sugar free pistachio pudding mix in it, mix up and eat. I made great smoothies with whey protein powder, frozen berries or frozen pineapple, a little cream and crushed ice, mix all in blender. I have tons of great recipes, if you'd like some, email me.

I've cut back my carbs, a little. The carbs isn't what did it for me. Last year for lent I gave up meat. I lost 15 pounds. I still don't eat nearly as much meat as I did before, but I am eating a lot more veggies. Lots and lots of low calorie fiber. I'm getting close to the year mark and I'm down 52 pounds and still going. I was a size 16, now I'm an 8.

My low carb went well all week considering the amount of post-holiday temptation that is still around and that DS1 is still home from college. HOWEVER, last night I had a catastrophe with a bag of M&Ms from Target 90% markdown...... ..... well, at least they were the almond variety! Back on the wagon today.

Congrats on your weigh loss, theresa - you go, girl!!!

I have a long ways to go, and my weight loss has been really, really slow. I've lost 22 pounds, but it's taken me six months! I have dropped a couple of dress/pants sizes, however, and it's due to exercise. I watch what I eat, go low on the carbs, but being older (52) has made the weight loss much more difficult. One thing that has worked for me is zumba...an hour of zumba can burn over 900 calories...and it's fun. Good luck...I'm right there with you!!!!
