Need ideas for 18th birthday present

I need to send a gift to a boy who just turned 18. I was thinking about something less than $50. Are there any food gifts that would be appropriate like a gift basket? I was thinking about a movie GC but I don't know what theaters are close by. I'd appreciate any ideas.

Fandango for the movies is good or, maybe a netflix gift certificate with some candies and popcorn! I did this a few years ago with a hollywood video gift certificate for my male neighbor.

I bought a gift card, a bucket of popcorn that can be popped in the micro and lots of candies. It was like a "night in" treat! Netflix is very popular now and can also be viewed from xbox 360 which many young men that age are into.

Any of my boys would have liked a Best Buy, Amazon, or Movie GC. If you know the boy's zip code, you can find out what theater chains are nearby. At 18, they would not have wanted food unless you are sending it to a college dorm. Then, home-made cookies and brownies are most appreciated.

I sent a "pail of plenty" from 1800flowers.com to my husband who was out of town for work & my teenage son was jealous, lol. It had candy, cookies, crackers, chips, juice boxes & soda in it, all in a plastic garbage can (which I thought was more "guy" like than a basket) I bought the medium size (54.99 without a coupon) & he said it was really big - the small is 44.99.

Having had boys and male nephews, I know at that age, they like the gift cards. I wouldn't get the netflix because he'd probably forget about it and not really get the full benefit of it. I'd go with a couple of $25/each gift cards to fast food restaurants or a nice restaurant if he's dating. One of my sons got gift cards to Olive Garden, Foot Locker and Dick's Sporting Goods. Loved them all.

Let's see, when I asked this question here a couple years ago, I was told to get him a prostitute for the night - wasn't that nice? NOT!

My DSs are hard to buy for unless you know what they like. Teenaged boys in general are very difficult to buy for. Video games and movies are popular with them, but you have to know what they have.

So, I agree with those that suggested the gift cards or just plain old cash. Sometimes my kids forget to use their gift cards (like mother, like son ).

The movie ticket idea is a good one, too. I put couple in DS1's stocking, but I have the liberty of knowing what theater he frequents. Use movietime.com or hollywood.com or something like that to find the local theater chains. You could bundle tickets with candy and snacks for a cute package if you wanted to go that route. I like it!

ETA: You could get cute and get him a couple of $18 gift certificates or 18 $2 bills.
