"Spiffy" Casual Spiffy Casual is derived from the term Spiffy, meaning “cool”, neat, unique, or interesting and has it's (sometimes ironic) origins in the archaic English exclamation 'Spiffing!'.
This suggests that one should dress up but keep it modern and trendy. A designer suit with a black shirt with or without tie or even something more creative such as mixing a T-Shirt with the suit, or wearing a very fashionable or designer jacket are all good. A lady might also want to consider a cocktail dress. As always, consider the event your are going to and who else may be attending.

What if the person throwing the party has a different opinion of what is Spiffy Casual?

I read at another website that if its concerning business that a nice pant suit would be good.I'll try to find the link.

Here it is.
dressforsuccess

"spiffy casual" consists of a nice pantsuit or nice slacks and a conservative blouse. Remember even on a casual day, your colleagues will be evaluating your dress.

I would say it probably means no jeans. Nice pair of slacks and a sweater. My personal opinion is if you write "spiffy casual" you are going to have people wearing lots of different things because as pointed out, everyone has a different opinion of what "spiffy" means!

I would think spiffy casual is the same as dressy casual. Me? I would ask someone at work!!!

What did you go with?? What were others wearing?

DH and I went to a XMAS party last month, and the dress was "casual dinner attire". We saw every aspect of all of it. Some had jeans and a sweater, some had suits.

Personally, I would think spiffy casual means no ball gowns for the ladies, and no suit and tie for the guys. A nice pair of dress slacks for both, and some nice accessories for the ladies. That's what I would wear, anyway.

I ended up wearing dress pants and a sweater... The atire ranged from jeans to suits... it was kind of interesting to see how everyone interpreted this....

Late for the party here, but I'd think along the same lines as AIA.

Casual means that no dress/gown or suit and tie is required. Spiffy means dress it up somehow - nice accessories or a special garment.....something that would be appropriate almost anywhere. For a woman, If jeans, maybe paired with a velvet vest....black pants and top with a collection of long chains around the neck...a mini with leggings under for a younger woman. For a man, perhaps jeans with a jacket....dress slacks with a polo-style sweater....

No sweats or bathing suits.

IMHO anyways...
