I've always heard the same thing. But think about it, though, you have chapstick in every room of your house and you carry it everywhere.... hmmm. I can't ever remember using it and I don't feel like I have to have it. We don't even have one stick of it in the house. I have a friend who has to have it on all the time. Makes me wonder if the Chapstick itself has something in it that's addicting or once someone starts using it, their lips feel dry and then it becomes like an addiction.

Bonne Bell Dr. Pepper lip smackers is all I use. I have used it since I was a teen and I have them all around the house and in my purse at all time. My lips NEVER get dry and it has a nice light tint, so I don't need lip stick. Oh, and it is cheap!

I tried to stop using a lip protectant and couldn't do it. I think it's simply that your mucous membranes get used to being protected, not that a specific type is addictive. Dry weather and wind exposure will cause faster loss of moisture as well. Another thing is to drink more water so your lips stay hydrated. dl |

what feels better? dry chapped lips, or moist lips? If you use some sort of lip balm it keeps the lips hydrated and moist. If you don't use lip balm, you have a tendency to like your lips---licking your lips makes them dry out. Using lip balm typically keeps you from licking your lips. I don't think it's a chemical in any one brand. I think it's just a simple matter of science. I have several different brands of lip balm--one on my bedside table, one or two in my purse, one or two in my makeup bag, one or two at my desk and one or two in my jacket pockets. I can't stand dry lips---they hurt, and are unappealing.

| I do not use Chapstick brand lip balm, I use Blistex brand in the green tube. As someone else pointed out, you might try drinking more water if you feel a need to constantly use lip balm of some sort. If I get severely chapped lips I use Campho liquid every hour or so until relief is obtained. Campho burns very bad with the first use, however, it works best for me for speedy relief and healing. |

I think a lot of it is just the idea of "having something to do". Constantly putting on chap stick/lip balm/etc. gives your hands something busy to do which many people crave. Constantly putting on chap stick reminds me of fidgeting, doodling, knuckle cracking, etc. Just little things that we do without even realizing we do them until someone else points it out. I know I do tons of these little things, especially the fidgeting.

All we use is Chicken Poop lip balm. We threw out all the chapstick but kept the Burt's Bees for backup. Here's their website Simone Chickenbone, Natural Put-Ons™ Selena

I use the Blistex in the white tube, and have it in my purse, on my computer desk, even by the couch where I watch TV. I tend to have dry lips and that is the only brand that doesn't make them feel sticky, but I also agree that sometimes it is a nervous habit too. If this was the ONLY bad habit I had I would feel blessed.

I don't think there's anything addicting about Chapstick. I used it for years without any problems. Now I use C.O. Bigelow Mentha Shine because I get severely chapped lips, and it works better for me than anything else I've tried.

Before I started using that, I loved Avon's Tangerine Lip Balm...but I don't think they make it anymore. |

Yes to Carrots or Burt's Bees lip balms work great and are all natural. I use them through the summer I don't need them in the winter unless we are out in the snow. I wear lip gloss everyday not sure if that helps or not but no problems other than summer.

Currently, Lypsyl I think it is called?? I will use whatever, and try to keep something on my lips with a bit of sunscreen in it. I think it is more of a habit than an addiction.

I have a VERY hard time going to sleep if I don't put some sort of balm on my lips. Like someone else mentioned, I don't think there is a chemical component, but I do think you can condition yourself and your body to expect specific things. I use Avon lip balm.
