Craigslist

It used to be when I posted something on craigslist I would get tons of responses as I always post things that are a fair price and in very good condition. In the last few months I have posted many items with nary a phone call or email. I would think someone would at least ask about something. I have everything from a designer purse to brand new outdoor supplies. Is anyone else having this issue? I spoke with my sister she lives in the SF Bay Area and has been helping my Mom sell her designer clothes for at least a year and they always get tons of calls and emails but in the last few months....nothing!
Is the economy so bad that people don't even have money for really great deals anymore?

I know that personally, I don't even look at craiglists (ebay either for that matter). A LOT of fraud has been going around on Craigslist lately and I know at least 3 local radio stations I listen to that warn again purchasing on it because of the many complaints of fraud. Of coarse, people need to learn to spot something that seems fishy...

Over the holidays I bought three things and each time the ad was older than a week (maybe even close to a month old - I found them doing searches for what I wanted). I was surprised the first couple of times that the items were still available, as they were nice items and priced fairly. They each told me that either noone had inquired or that they had been low-balled over and over. I know I was looking there because I needed garage sale pricing ......... I got what I wanted and they got the price they asked for. I hadn't heard to be careful because of fraud, but then again, I looked for toy-type stuff. I do know that I've seen some high prices - and maybe that's why people are low-balling. Who knows, maybe it is the economy, maybe it is fraud, maybe today it's the season (y'know, when folks are trying to free themselves of clutter rather than purchasing more - for me it lasts thru spring).

Do you post pics and clearly state prices?

While I've never even looked at cl, in reselling typically the seller thinks his/her price is cheap while the buyer thinks the seller's price is high........it's subjective.

Along the same lines, sellers typically think their item is in fantastic condition and most likely it is not, especially if used. Again, it's subjective.

I am getting ready to sell a few things and was browsing craigslist a couple days ago. I had to laugh at some of the things I've seen. The one that stands out was a Buckle gift card with $31.57 left on it. The seller wanted $30 for it. WTH? Is the hassle worth $1.57? If you are interested in saving $1.57 then I'm thinking you shouldn't be shopping at Buckle! JMO!

we tried selling a sectional on craiglist for $500 and the seller sent a check for $5000 asking us to cash it and take $500 and Western Union the balance to someone else- we are not that stupid and after he emailed us a few times he disappeared and we tore the check up

Yes and I also post "will deliver" "make me an offer" and "will consider trades". I always post at least three pictures of the item. Some items you need to show both/all sides as well the bottom and inside. Everything is always clean and well cared for with no smoke or other smells.
After reading your post I am beginning to think maybe it is the economy. Like you and some of the other posters I usually look for specific items whereas in better financial times I would just peruse the ads looking for any good deal. Perhaps that is the main problem. Nobody is looking for what I have. Last night someone offered to trade a pair of designer shoes for my designer bag but they were not my style. Some other jerk responded to all my ads with an ad for a get rich scheme that is one of the things I believe makes people not want to deal with it anymore.

I have never used CL in my life. My good friend does, and she gets a lot of porn sent to her email.

We have been using craigslist for a while now. Mostly to get rid of unused stuff hanging around collecting dust, but also have picked up some freebies. Most of our posted items are free or listed way low in price. i.e. 1/4 of the purchase price.
The items move quickly in less than a day or so. When we are giving something away for free, we read all emails and choose the one that is most sincere. To date, we have never received any porno and/or unsolicited spam. We have a friend that uses craigslist as a hobby. He picks up freebies, cleans and fixes them and then either turns them around for a quick profit or donates them to a person(s) in need.

I don't get the porno either. I'm trying to figure out how you would - your email is encrypted until you respond so not just anyone would even know your email...

I do get some reponses sometimes that are fraud, but I just don't respond to them. They're pretty easy to spot - lots of typos, different terms or payment method than you stated, etc.
