Another Cleaning Question

Our water is so bad that we keep a Mr Clean eraser in the shower/tub and when we take showers we have to scrub a little every single time or it'll get too yucky. Is there something (not too toxic) that we could spray on and just rinse off that is new or not found in the regular stores? I would just love to find something I could spray each day and just rinse it when one of us gets in.
There is nothing wrong or bad about our pipes the H2O is just yucky. We would not drink it unless it's an emergency.
I'm tired of scrubbing every single time I get in the shower which is basically every single day.

TIA!!!

Hey Anna!

Okay, several questions. What is your shower made of? Fiberglass, stone, tile, granite? What kind of "mess" are you seeing? Mold/mildew, white streaks, water spots? Do you have a shower curtain or a shower door? If you have a shower door, is it see-through glass or the other kind (can't think of what it's called right now). What products have you tried?

Let me know and I'll try to help you!

M.

Shower curtain that we leave open to allow drying. The tub is iron with a porcelain finish. The shower walls are vinyl coated I believe. The mess I'm seeing is "patches" or grayness that have to scrubbed I don't know how else to describe it. I guess it almost looks like a streak of gray paint in the middle of the tub. I have tried all the mainstream cleaners that you supposedly spray on and then just rinse off but none work.
Thanks Mariah.

You can put car wax on the walls of your tub and walls around the tub after you clean it. Do you have hard water?.

Try Easy Off BAAAAM, I think it is called??? Purple bottle, maybe an orange bottle?? CLR in the green bottle. Or, you can try vinegar, anything acidic, really.

I am with KVMJ on the car wax thing. Sounds funny, but, it will save you time in the long run.

I'm not sure if the water is hard I don't think so there's no spots on my dishes and the soap suds up. I looked up "how to tell if you have hard water" and that was two of the signs. I hadn't thought of car wax I will give it a try after I get it cleaned. CLR seems good I bought some but on the bottle there are many restrictions. You're not supposed to use it on "natural stone, marble, terrasso, colored grout, painted or metallic glazed surfaces, plastic laminates, Formica, aluminum, copper, brass, steam irons, refinished tubs, or any damaged or cracked surfaces". It also says "may etch older sinks, tubs and tiles.
So here sits the bottle they show it on tv unclogging the showerhead which is why I originally bought it but if you follow those restrictions, what showerhead would it work on? Not ours. I can't afford to replace anything so I didn't want to risk it.
I haven't tried Easy Off Bam yet. I almost bought the new Mr Clean spray cleaner but where I saw it the price was $6 and not knowing if it work I passed.

Is it possible you have actually worn the finish off of the vinyl? I say that because you talk of a color change which doesn't necessarily mean it's dirty.

It comes off with the Mr Clean Magic eraser and shines white again until someone else takes a shower so I know it's some kind of residue I'm guessing from the yucky water.

Easy Off Fume Free (the same kind you use on your oven) works wonders on fiberglass shower doors. If, however, you're seeing this build up after every single shower, try Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner. Last one out of the shower every day pushes the button. They offer a money back guarantee if it doesn't work, and there's a $5 coupon available at Scrubbing Bubbles®. I do NOT recommend this cleaner for anyone with glass shower doors (for anyone else reading).

Is there any chance it's soap reacting with the minerals in your water rather than just the water causing this? If you think that's possible, try cleaning your shower and then using Zest for soap and see if that makes a difference. I've found several different types of soap that react with minerals.

I would NOT recommend CLR for an iron tub with a porcelin finish. There's a good chance it'll ruin it, and it is VERY toxic. Also don't use "The Works". Will it may "Work" it is also highly toxic and not good for porcelin.

Have you had your water tested? Do you know what kind of minerals it has in it? How does your toilet look? If there's not a nasty ring around your toilet, I'd be inclined to believe it's the soap reacting with the minerals.

Let me know if you decide to try it - I'd love to know what you think of it.

Mariah

Sometimes the water in the toilet leaves a ring and sometimes it doesn't. We've never had the water tested we don't drink it. I'm not sure about the Automatic Cleaner I've read reviews on it and in Consumer Reports they put newspaper in the shower/tub and saw that it only hit certain places the rest stayed dry. My husband used Irish Spring I use St Ives Fresh H2O body wash. What do you think of the Easy Off Bam that aia suggested? And the car wax after I get it clean?

You ought to get a water filter for your shower head. It keeps hard water stains and scaling from your shower walls and makes your hair and skin so smooth and soft. I got mine on eBay, but they have them at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. They last 6 months. Most of them are universal fitting. Once you've bought the whole attachment/filter, you just replace the filter from then on. They're only around 25-30 bucks for the whole kit, filters cost less. What I love is that there is no chlorine smell!! I hate that.

I will look into this is there a filter that must be changed?

Car wax works great, just make sure you only put it on the walls of the tub, not the bottom.

We've never tried the Bam, Anna, but I wouldn't hesitate to give it a shot. We've also never done the car wax thing, but we have used RainX on glass shower doors once we had them really nice and clean. It takes awhile to put on (in fact, this is a job that one of my crew absolutely, positively HATES), but it lasts so long and saves so much time in the end!

We do have several clients that use the scrubbing bubbles thing, and it really does a nice job. With a money back guarantee, it might be worth trying.

For the record, the soaps we've noticed that leave a horrible residue are Caress, Dove, Ivory, & Dial.

Has Mr. Clean magic eraser been mentioned?? You can use that IN the shower, as you are showering, just wipe the walls down.

Also, forgot to mention, I got one of those squeegy things at Target. I wipe down the shower walls with it after every shower.

We bought the Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner. However, their refills are VERY expensive, so I use Arm & Hammer Daily Shower Cleaner and just refill the bottle that came with the Shower Cleaner. You push the button and it sprays all over your shower. Last one to shower pushes the button (you want to spray it while it's still steamy in the shower. I've tried the Dollar Tree refills and they don't work. So go with a name brand.

That's what we use now. We keep one in the shower and whoever is there uses it. I am just looking for something easier so we can just spray and rinse. And it's getting kind of costly to keep buying the Magic Erasers when we go through so many. I though a bottle of something would be less expensive.

Yes, the filters last 6 months for average use, there are 4 people in my family, so we probably are above the average. The filters run about 20 bucks......so 40 bucks a year. You really will be surprised at how clean it keeps your shower, plus your hair and skin feel like you have a water softener!

don't leave the shower curtain open---pull it close. think about it, when you leave the curtain open you are gathering wet material which invites mold/mildew.

I'd suggest a spray bottle w/ a 1:10 vinegar solution. Just spray it when you are done showering.

Do those automatic shower cleaners on full sized tubs or just shower stall sized showers?
