J D Salinger dies

He was a part of most of our growing up most people "back in the day" were required to read Catcher in the Rye

They're still required to read it. DS in 8th grade just started reading it on Monday for his language arts class. ~Lisa

I heard that he had several unpublished writings at his home so maybe we will soon see more of his work.

I send my condolences to the family. It's sad to see he died. I know a few people who liked the "Catcher in the Rye".
Lucky you clubmom. I didn't like the book at all.

Never read Catcher in the Ride? Outta curiosity, where did you go to hs? I thought it was one of those required readings *everywhere*.
btw, I read it, hated it. Also hated Franny & Zooey and Raise High the Roofbeams..
Am I in the minority?

I never had to read it either.

I heard somewhere that after John Lennon was murdered Salinger quit public appearances because the murderer had Catcher in the Rye on him. Can't remember the guys name. Thought that was an interesting tidbit. Don't know if it's true or not....

I checked out The Catcher in the Rye and Franny and Zooey along with my other library books today. I haven't read Catcher since high school and thought I'd reread it as a sort of tribute.

Catcher in the Rye wasn't required reading when I was in high school-I graduated in 1989.

Guess I should pull out the copy I have and finally read it. I collect banned books and it was one of the titles on the list so I picked up a copy one day out thrifting but have never read it.
