College Graduation Big Party or Small Dinner

My DD graduates from college in May. I know that if I want to have a big party I must book now. I am stuck of which route to go. Big Party or a small intimate dinner at a really nice restaurnat. She is my oldest and I don't really know what the norm is for a College Graduation. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have never been invited to a big party for a college graduation. High school yes, but not college. When our daughter graduated from law school, and after her graduation ceremony, she had a very small, intimate dinner. Just her husband & child, the in-laws, her Dad and I, and her brother.

When my niece or close family friend graduated from college, I sent a card with a check. In other words, I wanted to acknowledge the graduation but did not need an invitation to a party to do so.

I've never heard of or been invited to a big party for a college graduation.

Now we did have a lot of parties the week before graduation but that was a whole different thing, lol!

Usually it's just immediate family/SO's and maybe a couple friends getting together for a nice dinner or a casual bbq or something similar. Not a big party like many/most people have for high school graduation.

My son graduated in the state that we had lived in. All of our family was in that state. We had a party at my parents' house. My son asked if some of his friends and their families could come (these families were all from out of state). All of his friends were part of ROTC as was my son. The ROTC ceremonies were on Saturday, then we had the party and on Sunday was the graduation ceremonies. Because he went to a large school, he had a large graduation ceremony with a couple thousand students and then one for his area which was about 200 students. We had a great time and lots of food.

My husband had a BBQ at our house for me. Many of my closest family and friends came. It was so much fun!

The college graduation parties I have gone to are big parties done at home or at a park with a BBQ or pot luck of stuff to eat/drink. I have never been invited to one at a restaurant or a rented facility.

My daughter graduated from College in December. We let her decide what she wanted. She opted to go out to dinner as a family. It was a few days before her hubby left to go back out to Sea, so she really just wanted family time! We had a great time, and made some wonderful memories!

Yeah, that's the norm around here, too.

People have high school graduation parties, but not college parties. I think most people would consider it a little tacky to ask for more graduation gifts.

A family dinner is usually what is done to celebrate college graduations.

I think everyone likes to do something different. My son wanted a small dinner for a few close aunts. My friend's son is having a big party at his house. My daughter is going to get a small dinner and then we are all going to Disneyworld, lol.

College graduations are smaller, more private / family oriented functions in my experience.

Ditto those who favor the small family function/dinner.

1st off thanks for all the replies. It varies around here but I had a talk with my daughter and she wants a barbecue at home not the whole hall and DJ thing. So it's a Barbecue with close family and her friends. She has done so well in school along with working 45 hours a week that I want to celebrate her acomplishments. She is an incredible 21 yr old!
