GE appliances?

Anyone have any experience with GE front loading washing machines? In the past week our washing machine and dishwasher both died. Dh works at GE and with his employee discount, we can get good deals. We are thinking of getting a new washing machine, dryer, dishwasher and a gas stove. Our current stove is electric and 20 years old, so we thought it was time to switch to a new gas stove. Hopefully, our electric bill will go down a little! Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Google the name of it with the word reviews. Go to Reviews from Epinions for reviews too. Check the United States and Canada BBB Consumer and Business Reviews, Reports, Ratings, Complaints and Accredited Business Listings for complaints and google the name with the word complaints after it.

We have a GE gas stove. We aren't very happy with it. It broke within a year of buying it. After having several "GE certified technicians," or whatever they call them come in to try and fix it without results, we finally called Sears. That guy came in and found a manufacturing defect and fixed it on the spot. We wasted so much time on that stupid oven.

Also, your husband probably knows for sure, but I though GE was dumping their appliance business. I heard this a while ago:
Good-bye to GE Appliances - BusinessWeek

Maybe it'll never happen, but it makes me question their commitment to and interest in their appliance business.

My DH also used to work for GE. We used to buy GE appliances as well due to his discount. He doesn't work for GE anymore, but even if he did, we will NEVER own any more GE appliances! They are terrible! They all have problems of some sort, it's $79 to have a tech come out and that doesn't include fixing it. They always break after just a few years and it's not cost effective to fix them. They do it on purpose just so you have to buy a new one. We had a tech come out to fix our washer one time and he commented it was a "dinasaur". It was about 7 years old! They are not made to last like they used to.

We switched to LG washer and dryer and so far so good. I don't know what will be next, but I do know it'll be something other than GE!

Our house came with GE appliances, and I'd avoid them in the future.

Our fridge is currently only half functioning, while awaiting repairs. For the most part, it's been pretty good, though it's kind of disheartening being told that it broke down due to the age of the parts when it's only five years old. The drip tray under the ice/water dispenser also tends to leak, which has made some rather attractive rust stains on the front of it.

Our gas oven mostly works just fine, but if you bump into it, you risk either turning on the burners (hello, gas leak!), or setting off the oven-lock function, which will turn the oven off if it's running. It's not at all hard to do either of those things. The light has to be turned on manually, too, which isn't a big problem, just a bit annoying.

The dishwasher is fairly craptacular, and I've been trying to find a detergent that works with it for about as long as we've had it. It has sections I haven't been able to open fully, so cleaning it doesn't work so well, either.

The washer (toploader) and dryer have been really good, oddly enough.

Thanks for the advice ladies, I really appreciate your responses! I was aware that GE is getting out of the appliance part of their operations. After doing a great deal of searching, we did end up getting a new GE gas stove, microwave, front load washer/dryer and dishwasher. Hubby and I did discuss other options, and priced them out. I think the employee discount we ended up getting just made it too good of a deal to pass on. We have had horrible luck with our maytag appliances, but yet our GE stove is almost 20 years old and still works fine. Sometimes, I think its just a flip of a coin. I am just hoping we have good luck with these appliances. Time will tell....
