Smile What a Find For the Backyard Bird Count!

OMG! I had to go out about an hour ago. Hadn't planned on doing that this morning because of the rain. As an after thought, I brought my camera and this is what I saw.

The bird on the left flew away almost immediately but the other one stuck around and let me get closer.

I was so excited my hands were shaking! This is the closest I've ever gotten to these magnificent birds and I've never seen two at the same time!!

Wow you really should publish some of your spectacular photos you are quite good (and lucky lol) with your photography.

These are magnificent! Most people do not get to see eagles other than in photos. You would love the place my husband and I go once a year to see the bald eagles catching salmon in the river. It's the most wonderful and amazing thing I've ever seen!

So cool! I have pics of eagles in the trees across the street, but you can barely tell what you are looking at! We are fortunate to have a pretty big eagle population in our area.

The first one I saw was on Lake Huron. I was driving to work and it swooped near my car and dove into the Lake to grab what I assume was a fish. Really neat!

Absolutely incredible pictures! I don't think most amateur photographers could get even remotely close to a bald eagle, and two of them? I think that I would be shaking from excitement too!

You really should start a blog. You never know who might discover your pictures.

How exciting. And how fortunate you decided to take your camera with you. The pictures are really clear and crisp. The birds look like you could almost reach out and touch them. What a fun discovery.

Just a little update. I went by the lake several times today while I was doing the bird count. Around the same time as yesterday, one of the eagles was on the same boat house. I only got one OK picture before he/she took off. I guess it was thinking... Oh NO! That crazy lady is back with her camera again.

I saw so many birds while I was out this morning! Yesterday was a cold, rainy mess so I think they were all out looking for food. This morning I counted 396 birds including robins, an osprey, a belted kingfisher and, of course the bald eagle among others. Good times!

Love your pictures! I remember going to Alaska and seeing them for the first time. They are truly magnificent birds to see in person!! I actually spotted one in Georgia a few years ago for the first time.

My camera is an ancient Sony Mavica. It's 9 years old and uses floppies! It's been acting up lately (often times won't accept the disk) and I know it's not going to last much longer. When it finally dies, that will be a sad day.

What is that on your roof? A lightening rod? A tv antenna?

That's actually a boat house located at the lake near my house. It might be a lightning rod but I think it's only for decoration.

I was out all morning counting. The best thing I saw was that the sandhill cranes appear to be building a nest! They've picked a good spot if the eagles and other preditors will just leave them alone. Anyway, here's either mommy or daddy (I can never tell them apart!) gathering some twigs and grasses.

I've wondered that as well. I don't count everything and I estimate a lot. Try counting tree swallows. OMG! They are so fast and there are so many of them down here. Same thing with turkey vultures. You just give it your best shot.

Here's today's offering. These birds nest outside of my Vet's office every year. They're ospreys (sometimes known as fish eagles) and we have a lot of them in this area.

I found a couple of birds I hadn't counted before while I was out this morning. A wood stork and several killdeer.

The only bird I wanted to see so I could add it to the count and didn't was a white pelican. Maybe next year.
