Dehumidifier?

We are in need of a dehumidifier. I have checked online however see mixed reviews for the brands.
We need something that would work for 750 sq ft, that absorbs around a gallon a day, and that is quiet. In addition to that we need a company that stands behind its' product with no hassle in servicing, if necessary.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

TIA!!!

Dehumidifier Site

I found a good dehumidifier comparison tool at that site. They also seem to have guides that could help you decide.

I tried out a dehumidifier several years ago, so hopefully the workings of one has changed since then. The benefit was not worth the problems it caused. The unit was not very quiet and the motor put out a lot of heat which caused the air conditioning unit to run more.

@genichols Oh jeez. Air conditioners actually work as a dehumidifier, so unless you live in a really high humidity area, a dehumidifier isn't necessary in places other than like a basement or crawl space, which I hope wouldn't cause the A/C to run more. Your experience does sound like a nightmare.

We needed the dehumidifier to use in the spring when it's rainy but not warm enough for the air to run enough to pull the excess moisture out of the air. There's lots of times when the house isn't hot but it's humid and would feel fine if the moisture was lowered.

It works for the whole house? How much does it cost and how much did you need to buy for the whole house? How long does one package or whatever last?

Thanks for the info!

we only use them in the basement (which is a full basement so it's as large as the whole first floor and it's very very damp) in the Summer (July & Aug in NY) we use 2 bags at the same time/month the rest of the time we use 1 bag and replace as they fill up (in the fall (sept/oct/nov we might replace it once, in the winter dec/jan/feb not at all, and in the spring mar/apr/may/june we might go thru 1 or 2 (the left over one from the winter and another one) they cost $10 for 4 bags at BJ's

P.S. we use bags that you hang, but there are containers that you can use also and refill as needed, those might be more economical and less noticeable

We have been using a dehumidifier for years. Our basement is unheated (under a double wide) and for some reason they made the basement really deep. Now our electricity really took a jump and we were wondering what we could do to keep it dry without using one. We really have a lot of humidity and in april-june and sept. through Oct. we have to empty it every three days. In June-sept. usually every day. We tried using a hose or putting it directly over the sump pump hole, so we wouldn't have to hand empty, but our sump pump keeps getting stuck and sometimes stays running too. UGH! Wondering if it would go through tons of the stuff you mentioned? Maybe will give it a try for a month or two. About two years ago I heard of something called a golden rod. It was a long rod that was plugged in that was supposed to take care of moisture. Some people use them in boats, but then I wondered if that would use alot of electricity too? Can't seem to win!

In the summer here, the humidity gets ahead of the a/c so I might try some of the damp rid this summer if I can remember to do so between now and then. It might save me some a/c money to pay for itself because I won't feel the need to keep adjusting the temp to keep it running more than it should.

So far so good with the Damp Rid! And there's only a bit of water in one of the containers but there's significantly less moisture in the air.
