On my way to the store this morning I spotted the Sandhill crane couple. I pulled over and, with camera in hand, headed toward them. Imagine my surprise when Mr. Crane started walking over to greet me or maybe tell me to get lost.
I'm sure this is a get out of my space behavior.
I wondered if I got down to his level if he'd find me less threatening so I knelt down first and then finally sat on the ground. He did seem to relax and for the next 10 minutes or so we checked each other out.
What a thrill. He was no more than 3 or 4 feet away!
The battery in my camera died so I had to go home to get the other one. When I came back, they were still there. Of course I'm walking around on other people's property. I always try and be very respectful of that but when the owner came over I was a bit nervous. No need, he was very pleasant. The cranes actually seemed to know him and they came right over.
I was also enjoying the numerous ospreys that were fishing. This is the hover position they take just before diving into the lake.
The owner and I talked for a while and all the time the cranes were within touching distance. Suddenly they took flight calling to each other as they flew away. For such a large bird, they can lift off quickly.
I hate to sound sappy but that was a very magical way to spend the morning.
