Taxing well water...

I've heard that the powers that be are considering a tax on well water use. Has anyone heard of this?

I haven't seen the proposal, just heard about it. It just doesn't seem right. That's one of the "perks" of having your own well!

If they could get away with taxing the air we breathe or the space we take up as we walk down the street they would do it. It's ridiculous.

I haven't heard about it, but that wouldn't be right at all --- my husband and I paid for that well (and it cost a bundle), it's on OUR land and it's OUR water!!! Besides, our land is already taxed....seems like the water would be included in that.

Do you have a link? (I'll just google it).

I guess there are a few ways to look at this. But, here is one. Water will run out. It isn't a question of if, but of when. Do you think the water hog next door (or tree farm) should have paid more than you, who I am sure is careful with this precious resource, to have water piped to your home to keep value to your property that will be relatively worthless without water?

I googled around and all I can find are comments in a few blogs and such from a year ago. Even those appear to be at the local level and based on hearsay.

Yeah, I haven't seen anything in writing and couldn't find anything when I googled it. I'll have to get the paper from my sister and research it.

The thing is, I did pay for my well. This is the second one on this property in 30 years. We live about 1 mile from Lake Huron. Water is not scarce here.

I suppose if they want to pay for new wells and reimburse for those already in, go ahead and tax it. But I doubt that is gonna happen.

And, I don't think we are really going to run out of water.

Huh? If our well goes dry, we have another one drilled. Simple as that (although costly). You don't live in a rural area and have water 'piped' from another person's property next door. You have to have your own well.
