Question Sweet 16 Gift Ideas for Girls

DS2's girlfriend is having her Sweet 16 party at a local restaurant in a few weeks. I'm not familiar with this whole concept....although DS2 has gone to a couple other girls' parties already this year...they seem to run the gamut from house parties to dress up events (like this).

ANyways, long story short, he needs to get her a nice gift. Anyone have suggestions on what a 16 year old girl would enjoy? He can't give her a gift card - that's too impersonal for a GF, I think.

My ideas are jewelry - either something with her birthstone (aquamarine and real, not created) or a necklace or bracelet from Tiffanys....looking in the $100-150 price range.

What do you think??

TIA,
cj/

Good Golly.... I wish I would have been his girlfriend in high school. That seems like a really nice gift. I got flowers from a guy I liked and I was thrilled!! A nice sweat shirt from Abercrombie or perfume? A bracelet is a very nice idea. Aquamarine stones can be pricey. A pretty pair of earrings is always nice.
You will have to tell us what you end up deciding and how the party goes!!

I think that is way too expensive of a gift. They are young. Jewelry would be nice, but I don't think it has to be that expensive at all. Maybe a nice bottle of perfume?? Good grief, I don't know. I just feel like spending that much money may put a feeling of added commitment they may not be ready for. JMO...

My daughter is turning 16 in 12 days (ugh!) and we always pick her gift out. This year we had no idea, so we let her pick it out. She wanted to go to the Vera Bradley store. She picked out a small back pack and a wallet that was $130 total for both. I hated that store! But, it is very popular with the teen girls. You/he could go take a look in there and see if anything strikes you.

Is she getting a car?
We gave our daughter a car for her 16th birthday -- From tiffany's I got her a keychain with her intials on it-- That might be a good gift?

Sooo....it seems like the general sentiment is that what I was thinking is too much, and I would normally agree for a birthday gift. But the party is sort of like a modest wedding reception type of affair - private room at a restaurant, DJ music, etc. DS and she have been "dating" for about six months and she and her family are very generous with him. She is an only child.

What do you think is appropriate under those circumstances?

DD turned 15 today, gave her an IOU/gc for a spa day to have hair done, makeup, foot & scalp massage, mani, and facial -n costs about 150 altogether at the Aveda Institute near us, she's thrilled. Also will be taking her on the local assn. for inns & b&Bs *choco-tour* - 5 places in one day w/gourmet chokkies and wine tastings.
We do the big expensive stuff at b'days instead of Christmas, and this year she lucked out and got more than normal as far as how much we spent.

perhaps a charm bracelet w/ a special charm from your son?

Or a gift certificate to a "fancy" day-spa--facial, mani/pedi...

You want something that is nice, and special, but you're right---she's a "baby", so you want the gift to reflect that she isn't a "big" girl. KWIM?

Is she particularly religious? Maybe a nice necklace or earrings w/ a religious symbol?

I would see what kind of handbag she normally carries and get one of the same brand. I like the Tiffany's gift since there is nothing like getting that blue box. They carry a Sweet 16 charm online that is sterling silver for $80.

I think you are right on track with what you have in mind

Tiffany is a great idea

Swarovski has some nice sparkly heart necklaces in the $100 range

I'd probably lean more towards jewelry over a pocketbook etc for this one

If they are in 16 year old love, I vote Tiffany, silver heart ear rings if her ears are pierced or silver heart necklace. Right now, Tiffany has drop heart earrings for $95 and a necklace around 150 I think. My favorite is the Carved Heart earrings, but they are around 250. One of my favorite jewelry items was given to me from boyfriend around that age. That piece of jewelry reminds me of a wonderful time in my life. I have no idea what happened to the boy because we broke up a few months later .... But, if this is truly a special relationship, I would have him step up to the plate. Boys need to learn these things

Are teenage girls into Pandora bracelets? You can get the base for $50 and add some charms for a gift.

Jewelry or whatever kind of purse she likes if she's into it. Maybe he can talk to one of her girlfriends I bet they all know what she would like.

Thanks for all the feedback. He ended up talking to one of her friends who thought that his GF would be nuts about something from Tiffanys ("you are the best boyfriend!" were her exact words ) He selected a sterling silver stackable ring that set hm back $115+tax...he paid for it himself.

The saleslady at Tiffany&Co was really, really nice to hm and gave him some extra freebies.....so blue box/bag it is! I hope that she likes it.

differnt things for their ipod or a new journal or something that they can work with creatively...if you go into a store like a music store or anything just ask a clerk what would be the best choice they may ask questions what the person is into and then help you by that...GOOD LUCK

If she doesn't, then she may not be worthy!
