Getting into "the" college

We are just beginning the process of looking for a college for our daughter -- she has decided she wants to attend Yale. Has anyone's children attended an Ivy league school- any tips?

Are you looking for financial tips or just tips on how to get accepted?

I've heard that they look for students in the top 10% of their class, with at least 4-5 AP courses--excellent SAT and SAT Subject test scores - extra curricular activities all through school -- leadership qualities (becoming class president or another office) etc

Will she be taking out student loans to pay for the tuition? If you listen to Dave Ramsey, he takes the position that it is ludicrous to go into major, colossal debt borrowing money to go to college. Something to consider.

I know nothing about this place. However, the link was sent out by the counselor at DD's school.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I've heard that Ivy League schools offer MUCH more financial aid than state or other private schools do. Might be something worth researching. No tips on getting in, sorry.

I don't think this is true. I went to an ivy and got no financial aid. My nieces each got into ivies and got no or very little financial aid. My sister just didn't have the money so they went to other excellent undergrad schools where they were offered hefty financial aid. Then, after they completed their undergrad degrees, one was offered either a hefty or full scholarship to Yale and the other to Princeton. Yes, they're both very bright and yes, I'm bragging.

It's a little late to start planning to get into an Ivy or any other highly selective college when you're in your junior or senior year. As someone else pointed out, you have to have excellent grades and extra curriculars. You also need something that makes you unique among all the applicants they get. Beyond that, one thing that helped me, I think, was applying early decision. But that was years ago and I don't know if it is still a good strategy.

Thanks for the information- jujubee- and everyone else

My daughter is alo extremely bright -- took the SAT first at the age of 12-- did extremely well - and received a award from Duke University

She has done very well on her PSAT and the counselor believes she will be a National Merit Honor Student

she sits for the ACT and SAT next month

She has filled her course work with AP classes and is at the top of her private academic academy -

I think she has been planning well - just has never mentioned Ivy league - which made me nervous

A traditional women doesn't need to be thinking about such things as college. She should be focused on getting a husband.

Wow. She does sound like she's on the right track! If you have any relatives who went to Yale, I think that can help a lot. It's better if you don't live too close too, They like geographic diversity. So, for example, if you live in Connecticut, it would probably be easier for her to get into Dartmouth or Penn than Yale.
