Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution

Did anyone else watch this past Sunday?

I was shocked (although I guess I shouldn't be) that people are so ignorant about what is unhealthy eating. I cannot believe what they feed kids in the schools and I was dismayed that people don't think it's important to change their habits. It's not about being "skinny" it's about living your best life and having a good quality of life.

Can people be really be that ignorant in this day and age? Those cafeteria workers were so resistant to change. And children are just that:children. You don't let them pick what they eat. You feed them what's healthy. If they wanted chocolate cake at every meal would you give it to them?
If they are hungry they'll eat the lunch. I can't believe the amount of waste. And the USDA mandates two bread servings each day for school lunches and brown rice doesn't count. Apparently only fluffy white bread or pizza crust with little or no nutritional value does.

I find it hard to believe that in this day and age of information overload there are still people who don't have a clue. When I used to play Bunco still I told one of the ladies no thank you to white bread she asked why I told her it's not good for you no nutritional value she was shocked and asked me if that's really true and where did I find that out. Hello!

I like this show and I hope it helps some people at least. I find it hard to believe that people who are morbidly obese have no desire to change their lives but I guess at this point in the game nothing should surprise me.

If Ruby can lose over 300 lbs then the only excuses anyone else has are laziness and ignorance.

I saw the show but it was before Sunday so maybe it was a preview???

I am not shocked. Our school lunch calendar has the "better and more healthy" choices every day marked with a star. The healthy choices are:

hamburger
pizza stick
mini pancakes with sausage
pretzel with cheese sauce
bean and rice burrito (this one seems the best of the bunch)
french bread boat
chicken nuggets

My son won't buy lunch period. He hates the food and he KNOWS it's not healthy so he won't eat it. My daughter is allowed to buy lunch 2 times a week. The only reason we allow it is because we eat healthy here at home.

I can't tell you how many kids I know who have never had a salad (and a few who have never had the option given to them). It's disgusting how some parents feed their kids but then again, it's what they are feeding themselves. There are so many overweight kids

Our school revamped their entire menu. We even have a salad bar as part of the option. I can honestly say, that I don't see too many of the teenagers who opt to make a healthy salad at lunch time. They have done away with soda, and regular chips. Now, they offer baked chips and water, milk or juice.

Do you remember the scene where Jamie did the chicken nugget experiment with the kids? He took a whole chicken and removed all the good chicken meat leaving a carcass. He chopped up the carcass and added chicken skin and whirled it in the food processor. He made chicken nuggets from this disgusting mixture. When he asked the kids if they would eat the nuggets, knowing they were made from the gross parts of the chicken, bones, cartilege, and skin, they said "Yes." It's really sad when kids can't tell bad food from good food.

I think a lot of it has to do with advertising. Children learn what is made for them and those advertisers know how to target them. I can't imagine eating that mess and "real" chicken nuggets legally can also be made with ***** infected meat. I remember reading an newspaper article on it a few years back.
When I was growing up we ate good wholesome food although. My Mom never bought processed foods except for cake mixes which were few and far between. Everything else was home made. I could not imagine preferring a mixture of crap instead of a recognizable piece of chicken.

Unhappy

To Anna and all the ladies here I totally agree and as far as the food that is served in our schools some of it is okay, but the turkey hotdogs and the turkey tacos they do not look the same nor smell the same as far as taste I would not know cause I do not eat meat but yucky and the hamburgers they look like they were cooked days ago yucky . I do like that they have added fruit slice and apple slices and more yogurt and carrot sticks and celery sticks it has to be better for obese or unhealthy children is a real concern. And in society we all know how cruel kids can be towards obese children. Peace. Catherine

I have also noticed that all the hot lunches have a serving of fruit, and a vegetable. Lots of whole wheat wraps, baked chicken breasts, applesauce, vegetable pizza, vegetables w/dip and they offer 2% milk, as well as skim milk. I do think they are making an effort to improve the hot lunches. I love the fact they offer the salad bar with the hot lunches. I also like that they offer baked chips and granola bars. I think they are trying to make small changes, so it isn't such a drastic change that the kids won't accept it!

You're right Tammy if they could just get the kids to eat more fruits, veggies, and fiber the rest wouldn't do as much harm. I can't get over what they throw away. I wish they could donate at least the whole apples and rolls that haven't been touched to somewhere or at least put them up for the kids to take home. I know some kids only get one meal a day the ones they eat at school for lunch. If they could take the untouched leftovers home it would be way better than feeding the garbage with them.

Besides the food that the kids throw away, I was pretty disgusted that the show itself was mixing all the milk, raw meat, and so on that the school and or families used in a week into a pile. Sure the junk food is pretty useless, but the other 'raw' materials was a shame.

When I was in school, someone in the administration came up with the idea of keeping the food garbage separate from the trash so that a local pig farmer could pick it up to feed his pigs. I think that was a cool idea.

Unfortunately, this can't happen because of the free and reduced meal program guidelines. To cut down on food waste, students only have to take their entree, milk and one other selection. It is frustrating to see of the waste, but think of the abuse and how much the program would cost if students were allowed to take the extras home.
Our district has implemented a nutrition club in which food is sent home with the truly needy students from an independent source.

Jujubee you're right I thought about that also however it is a one time thing while the school waste goes on every single school day.

CScout I hadn't thought of that. But I have read about programs that send backpacks of food home for kids and it's a great idea. Maybe if the kids would just leave food they know they're not going to eat? There has to be some way to get around it. Once again govt regulations lead to waste of taxpayer money.

I just wanted to add that I watched this with my kids. They were disgusted by the show and the chicken nugget experiment. We eat pretty healthy here - not perfect but better than most. I hope the show does well and changes come with it.
As a side note, I know my kids don't get enough time to eat their lunch. They come in from recess and then eat. Sometimes they only get 15 minutes from start to finish. Anyone who has ever sat thru a lunch knows they get up to get napkins or need help opening items. Also, the amount of times the lunch light goes off and they need to stop doing everything because the noise level is too high, leaves them precious time to eat. So frustrating!
