In today's mail I received a letter from the census telling me that a few weeks ago they had sent me my census packet to fill out. Has anyone else received this letter? I don't understand why they would waste money first sending letters saying that they were going to mail it, and now sending letters saying that they sent it. What's next letters telling us that they received the envelopes back from us??

Yesterday, and I couldn't make this up if I tried, I happened upon a place where you can get "help" filling out the census. Stay with me, this is the part that tops everything. Laying on the table were the old fashioned paper advertising fans. Both sides had been printed with hoorah about the 2010 census.

Paper advertising fans were popular much earlier - as in easily over 50 years ago - as giveaways for people who didn't have air conditioning (as was common in that era).

That tops it for me - that these were thought of, approved, printed, shipped, and laid out.

Yes I got a notice my forms were coming, got the forms, then got a reminder....and those stupid commercials are really bad. I could have made a better commercial and for a lot less money! I can't imagine the amount of money that's being wasted on this.

"They" say that it requires 3 letters: one to tell you the Census is coming, the actual form itself, then a "reminder' sent later-which is automatic and does not take into account whether or not you have sent your form in EVERYBODY should be getting them. Although I haven't received anything yet. I have been busy at work and have not had a chance to talk to my neighbors or to the postmaster here to see if anyone in my town has. It wouldn't surprise me if they are going to use me as a scapegoat and have me be the very first (and only) person in the history of the Census to be fined and not even send me a form. We'll see.

Well, I have received all the mentioned Census mailings as mentioned in this and other related threads including the official census questionaire, which I filled out and mailed back as soon as I received it. In todays mail I received yet ANOTHER census questionaire identical to the official one I mailed back. I am the only resident in this house. So, WHY am I receiving yet another one?
I sure would love to visit the census office who is wasting all this money sending out all these mailings. Talk about kicking some butt. I definitely would be doing some kicking.

I was at an accepted student's event at a state college today with my dd and they were giving out large, nice soup bowl style mugs with the college's name on one side and US census on the other. They had tons and tons of them. (btw, made in China)

Is this an Obama thing?

Right after he took office he indicated that he was going to shift oversight of the census to the White House, if I recall correctly.

Is all this hooplah his idea?

And if so, is the hooplah evenly distributed among congressional districts, or are areas with more "blue" voters getting more freebies than areas with more 'red' voters?

I ask because I am in a very red area and have gotten the mailings and saw the tv commercials, but have encountered no fans and no coffee mugs and none of the other things I keep reading about here.

We also received two census forms. Ours was because there is always much confusion about the name of the road we live on...it has several, so I expect to get more...

Hm, I didn't realize that. Do you live here? I know ours was because of the road name confusion, it was addressed in two different road names.

I agree. They need to STOP sending out these reminders and even junk mail - what a waste of money and landfill room. If they stopped sending out these reminders and putting ads on tv, maybe they wouldn't have to cut the NASA budget. Guess it's more important for Obama to send out census letters then to use it in other places. Could this be a reason why our national debt is 12 BILLION?

Considering the ammount of lead-time our government needs to do things I highly doubt all of the hoopla can be blamed on Obama, considering he hasn't been President that long. Much of this stuff was probably planned quite some time ago, particularly advertising campaigns that had to be budgeted for, designed and ordered. After all, they do this every 10 years so its not like they haven't had a good long while to think up ways to make this time "different or better". Its probably the sole job of some people on the government payroll....

We got the actual census form, sent in back, but never recieved ANY letters...either before or after sending in our census form.

Me too. I got the actual census only. Mailed it back the same day and still nothing else.
