How to give away Rx?

I have an almost full box of Lidoderm pain patches. These are individually wrapped, so not icky to give away. The question is, how? It's an Rx. I don't want to throw them away, because if you don't have insurance it's over $200/box. Does anyone know of an organization that can legally accept these and give them to someone who can't afford them?

Is there some type of free clinic in your area that might be able to take them. If not, you might try the health department.

If you are affiliated with a church, you could probably find someone with a medical missions connection. While I believe it is illegal for them to be dispensed to a patient in the U.S. unless they chain hasn't been broken between pharmacy and patient, that isn't an issue in foreign countries. My relatives who go to a third word country several times a year to do medical work take all sorts of pharmaceuticals (most of them donated by pharmaceutical companies that are close to expiry), and often they are from sources such as you.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I checked the DHHS web site for MA and apparently, you can legally donate in MA too. The problem is it doesn't say where!

Calling a church or free clinic would be a good place to start. That's very nice of you.

My Doctor excepts RX's you can't use, for one reason or another, and gives them to people that can't afford to have a RX filled.

Lord yes..those things are VERY expensive! I have a standing Rx in the pharmacy that my pdoc gave me and I can't get filled. The pharmacist said she would save it in case I got decent insurance that covered some or most of the cost. So hopefully someday I can get them.

And to add to the previous post, yes your docs office could probably use them too. To give to people who cannot afford the rx's. as samples, so to speak.

When my father passed away we donated all his leftover meds(diabetic meds -mostly injectables) to a local Hospice. We had a HUGE box of stuff for them. There are always people that cannot afford them but can use them.

Yes, if the doctor won't take them for a low income person, you usually can donate to a hospice, even things like Ensure, bandages, etc. that are unopen and within the date codes. I have even donated to nursing homes things such as new blood meters and strips too.
