I went back to the Reserve in Lakeland this morning. This is the place with the gators. Didn't see any of those today. Heard a bunch but they must have been hiding.
What I did see is a new bird to me and one that's fairly rare in the USA. It's a black-bellied whistling duck. When you a bird watcher, seeing a bird for the first time makes you do a happy dance.
And, yes, it really does sound like they're whistling.
I also saw another bird called a purple gallinule. I have seen these before but never up close. What colors!!
There were also ospreys.
and a tri-colored heron.
