A friend of mine asked me today. she just got a pc and is new to it and she was wondering if there was a way to see who sent her a email to her new email account she hasnt had but about a week. its not a freebie account like yahoo or gmail. I hadnt never thought about it and it got me to wondering too.

Hmm. Well, I'm just guessing, but if she doesn't recognize the username and she just got her computer, then its probably spam. Good luck finding the free reverse lookup - sorry I'm not any help.

| In short, No
There's no central registry of email addresses, since there's no requirement to enter any identifying information in order to setup email. Some services may request it, but this can generally be falsified, and if you have access to your own server, setting up your own email is very simple. You can look up domain names at a WHOIS lookup, like whois.sc, or look up IPs at a site like arin.net (or the local equivalent, depending on the region the IP is from), and you can read email headers (you need to be fairly nerdy to do this), but you can't see who owns an email address. Oh, and it's very easy to make it look like it came from a different email address than the one that sent it.
