e-cigarettes

Anyone have any thoughts on this new e-cigarette? My husband is a smoker and I'm looking for people's opinions on these things. Like it, hate it. Tried it and went back to the real thing?

I have no experience with them, but, personally I would think most anything you inhale that isn't air that you breathe normally, can't be good for you.

Altho' I agree with you, what I'm looking for is opinions from people who have actually used these or have first hand knowledge of someone who does. Do they mimic a real cigarette? Did they stick with it for a long time or feel dissatisfied?

I bought it thinking that I could still smoke and it would be healthier.
Every time I tried to use it I would end up in a coughing fit. My husband tried it and although he didn't cough, he also didn't like it.
I had also tried the patch but it still has nicotine and it didn't work for me.
Finally, 8 days ago, I quit cold turkey. I still have the cravings but I know that it's psychological.
Also, he really has to want to quit himself or nothing will work.

Congratulations. I quit on November 4, 1994. I cried often. I bought myself a little gift every friday. For years I couldn't take a long car ride alone or go to a bar. Yes, it is psychological, but that is a very strong aspect.

Good luck.

This thought worked for me because I really do love to smoke. ==== I haven't quite smoking. I have just stopped for now because it isn't good for my health and those who love me don't want to watch me die of lung disease. HOWEVER -- If if I am diagnosed with a terminal illness or if the world is about to end --- I will again smoke. Also, if they every outlaw cigarettes, I am going to buy and hoard just in case I get diagnosed terminal or the world comes to an end ... That got me through a number of years and every once in a while I still have to think about my exceptions.

FDA and Public Health Experts Warn About Electronic Cigarettes

Yes, the report said there are harmful chemicals in the e-cigarettes - but regular cigarettes have harmful chemicals too. The diethylene glycol, that is mentioned in the report, is already used in cigarettes as an agent to help the tobacco from drying out. So I would think the e-cig IS less harmful because you don't get the tar in your lungs...which is basically the main cancer agent.

I think if you are trying to stop smoking, this would be a decent crutch to help you get over the really rough spots, no worse than using nicotine patches.

Diethylene glycol is also used in deodorants, creams and lotions and can be absorbed thru the skin.

OP - I've seen these at the mall and they had samples they let people try - and yes, they had a special tip they changed out for each person - maybe you could find a kiosk near you and try them.

Just a quick update and thanks to everyone who replied.

I received the trial package for my husband. I was really excited about this because my sister, her boyfriend, her neighbor, my son-in-law had already been using them and were very excited about them. All heavy smokers for many years - this was the magic solution. Going to make quitting easier, much cheaper than the real thing...

My husband has tried them and is much less enthusiastic than everyone else. It's just not the real thing.

Now it turns out the thrill is wearing off for the rest of my family members who were so gung-ho in the beginning. I guess it's just a new gimmick and the only real way to quit is to WANT to quit.

And my husband does not want to.
