What weird old stuff do you still have?

I don't mean heirlooms. I mean stuff you got new and still have. I tend to keep everything, so I still have:

  • * Plastic pink elephant (with marbles in his feet so he slides around the floor) that I got for Christmas when I was 6 mos. old
  • * Smarty Bird that I got when I was 5: YouTube - Ideal Toy Corporation Smarty Bird 1964
  • * Puzzle ring I got in Junior High.
  • * Plant that my biology teacher gave me when I graduated from High School (30 years ago.)
  • * Black rotary phone (that we still use)
  • * Computer running Windows 2000 - though I recently got a new one, so as soon as I transfer all my files, I'll get rid of it...

Thanks!

Yup, he's 30 years old. I guess I inherited my mother's green thumb. I've killed some plants over the years, but I usually have pretty good luck. I have another plant that's about 28 years old.

Wait I have a old plant too, it came as a gift because I was the classmom for my son Tommys class we were each given a plant in a pot and on the pot the teacher Mrs Shay wrote their names and then they each put their thumb print so he was in 2nd grade and now is in his last year of College so this plant would be almost 15 years old lol. Peace. Catherine

My dentist used to give out these little rubber animals instead of candy and I still have a bunch of them. I also have my jacks and ball in the denim embroidered bag I made myself. I have paperbacks that I read as a teen.
Of course I have things my son made in school and some of my Grandma's and Mom's things.

ILL - That's great that you have a long-lived plant too! It's especially fun when they mark a significant event.

Anna - My dentist gave out those little rubber animals too! I loved them, but I don't think I have them anymore.

Weird coincidence -- whenever we went to the dentist, we'd get one of those animals from the dentist, and then my mom would take us to a nearby greenhouse and let us each buy a small houseplant.

(That greenhouse was just sold and torn down about a year ago - It was the site of the PBS show, Victory Garden.)

Maybe it's why going to the dentist has never been a problem for me!

I have the toy box that I got on my 2nd Christmas. It looks like a bench, so I use it to store our shoes now.

my father's little rocking chair from when he was a toddler
a doll that my grandmother had since before my dad was born the doll is now sitting in the rocking chair in my livingroom.
I also have my grandparents end tables, coffee table and old Magnavox stereo that they had since before I was born, I always told my grandma I wanted her stuff, so after she passed away I got it. The stereo and coffee table are in storage because my apartment isn't big enough for it. I am using the end tables as a tv center in my livingroom.

Those are great! The Blythe doll sounds a little creepy! Maybe David Sedaris has your Mrs. Beasley's glasses.

Are you familiar with David Sedaris? He's a humorist and he has a bit about buying "Euro" style glasses that he thought made him look cool. That is, until one day when he was at a flea market and saw an old Mrs. Beasley doll. He realized his glasses looked just like hers. He ended the piece with, "Guy look like a$$es in Euro style glasses."

I still have my stuffed monkey. His name is Judy. No idea why I named him Judy. I've had him since I was 2-3 so he's at least 40 years old. I still sleep with him every night and when I go on a trip, he comes with me!

I don't mean to one-up , but I have a plant that my grandmother gave to me.
It was passed down from her mother who "brought it over on the boat" around 1890.

Yep I always thought of him as a him, so I really have no clue why I named him Judy.
So many people say he is the scariest ugliest thing ever. When I travel with him I always have his head popped out of my bag and so many people stop me and ask if he's mine and how long I've had him. He is so much my security. He's my comfort when I travel.

You can see he has been very much loved, he only has random spots of fur left. He has one furry spot on the top of his head that I sometimes still rub when I am upset or stressed.

The common name is cast iron plant.
Aspidistra elatior Cast-Iron plant Cast iron plant | Plant-Care.com

Aspidistra will also

■Tolerate dust as well as heat, cold, wet soil, drought, neglect and dimly lighted places.
■Tolerate temperatures as low as 28 degrees without injury to the foliage.
■Tolerate light levels as low as 10 foot candles
■Make a great addition to cut flower arrangements; the foliage often lasts for weeks.
■Generally Pest Free

So, you can see why it's still alive! It's not my TLC

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! I have one like that at my mom's house. I think my dad won it at a carnival. Geez......I think it must be at least 30+ years old. I have a few stuff animals that ALWAYS travel with me too (so does the hubby).

I have one pillow that is from something like 1976 that I MUST sleep with. Poor thing has been fixed so many times. It use to be rectangle but it's now square from all the repairs. It did have a picture of Smoky Bear but now is just covered with material.

When I first saw this thread the other day I had on an 11 year old Disney World T-shirt. I know it's 11 years old because it commemorates visits in 1999. Surprisingly it is still in pretty good shape. Better than the person wearing it.

I have some stuff that belonged to my grandmother and mother. Probably the oldest thing in the house is a newspaper from New York. It was a minor company but the first copy of their paper ever. It was printed in the 1860's. My favorite old thing is a doll that belonged to my grandmother. It's about 120 years old.

I can't beat the plant given by a grandmother, but in 1975 my father gave me a little cello bag with two log type things in it. They were about 4 inches long and maybe an inch or so thick. They were called Ti Trees, I think. I threw them in a drawer and forgot about them. A year later my dad died and not long after I was cleaning out a junk drawer and found them. One had rotted but the other looked usable, so I finally got a pot and some soil and started the thing. I still have it. It's a great plant, takes lots of abuse and hasn't been transplanted in 20 years. I have started babies from it for family who have all managed to kill theirs. I water it at random. It has gone up to six weeks without, and many of the leaves turn brown, but the plant just rejuvenates the minute it gets water. I have twenty some house plants and most are succulents. I think at least two of those are about the same age as the Ti Tree.

As for old things, my whole house is filled with old things. I see the magazine spreads with the modern sleek unadorned house interiors and long for that simplicity. But it's not to be. My "stuff" owns me and one of us has trouble saying goodbye.

Wildwood and crittles I totally agree with both of you I know its a little off topic but I simply love alllllll old stuff that is why my home is filled with old stuff. I have been collecting and keeping my country home magazines for 24 years now , they are all over and will never throw one out, every now and then I enjoy to flip through the older ones because country decor changes so much, there are so many phases of country decor but it basically comes down always to stuff from the past. When I open up a magazine and see modern homes alot of glass hardly any furniture black leather couches chrome applicances I cringe yuck all the way. Again great post and I feel personally speaking I love to be able to hold onto all my old stuff forever because they are memories of my past and the past we cannot bring back but cherish forever. Peace. Catherine

I have a africian violet that was my grammas and she died in 1977.

The weirdest thing tho is what my mom has. She has my braces from my teeth that I got taken off when I was in the 10 grade. Now the weird parts of this is , i was in the 10th grade in 1977 and I was in a car wreck in 1999 and thanks to the air bag, lost all my upper teeth in the front and on the rt side. So I have false teeth now. And my mom keeps hanging on to the braces I had for teeth I DONT HAVE!!!!!

LOL.. that reminds me. Somewhere around here is a plastic container with my gallstones in it. In 1975 I had my gallbladder removed. The attacks were dreadful and the post-op not much better. I told the surgeon going in that I wanted my gallstones because anything that caused so much pain and so much money was something I wanted to see. I kept thinking that one day I would have them dipped in gold and strung on a necklace. But I restrained the urge and now they are gathering dust in a closet. Wouldn't that be a conversation stopper. "Oh I just love your necklace. It's so unusual. Where did you get it?" LOL...

You could probably sell them on ebay. People will buy anything there.

That's a thought. I'm getting up there and I would hate to have my kids come across them after I'm gone. The therapy would just be too much.
