thanks

When you put stuff outside for free do you often have people come to the door and ask if it is really free and may they have it? I do.
People also come to the door to thank you for what you have put out. Ain't life great.
I am also a curb crawler and love getting free stuff.

No. I've never had anyone thank me, but I'm kinda glad they don't. It would be too disruptive to have everyone who took something come up and ring the bell.

Glad you enjoy it though!

Well I live in a tiny rural town and it's always almost the same lady who gets all my free stuff. She waves when she drives by and if I'm out working in the yard or something she'll say thank you but she has never (nor has anyone else) knocked on my door. I always put a big giant FREE sign in big fat sharpie taped onto whatever it is or the box it's in.

My dad once saw a crib by the side of the road - had only three sides...it was clearly meant for the garbage - not as a give-away.

However, my dad actually went up to the door and asked if the peoplehad the fourth side! They DID have it - they were using it as a ladder for their treehouse! They were happy to give it to him, and he ended up with a nice crib, which he gave to someone who needed it badly.

I would never have had the nerve to do what he did, but it clearly pays off when people do!

Once my dad stopped by to ask if he could have some bags of grass clippings that someone had out for the trash truck. He was going to use them as mulch for his tomato plants. The guy said, "Sure, $x each." I can't remember how much he wanted per bag, but my dad just said, "no, thanks" and left. I couldn't believe it when he told me that!

Wow - what a jerk! (The grass guy - not your dad.)

I do feel kind of awkward taking something that is out, that is meant for trash, but I have done it numerous times. In one very well-to-do neighborhood, I have asked just to make sure. I wish folks here would just set out a FREE sign, so it's very clear that the item can be taken. When we lived in Minnesota, it was very common to see a FREE sign out on things. People here just don't care if the garbage man picks it up or not.

Agreed a free sign would be nice , however for me I always wait till it gets dark and go back and get the item or items I have gotten and hope and pray they were not taken before I got there but it has happened I just do not have the nerve to take it when it is daytime. You never know what you can find on the curb one mans junk another mans treasure for sure so much fun.. Peace. Catherine

Something that ILuvLucy said reminded me of something my aunt used to do...

When my aunt saw something like a chest of drawers by the side of the road, she did something peculiar - she would take ONE drawer into her car, and drive home.

Then at night, she'd have her son go out and pick up the chest of drawers! She'd be almost guaranteed that nobody else would have taken it (now that it was missing a drawer!), and she could appoint her son to put it into his truck and get it to her in the evening, after dark.

We got a kick out of hearing her trick!
