I would like to know who made them the decision makers as to who can afford to pay for meals. Just because you don't qualify for FREE or reduced meals does not mean that all days you can afford to pay for your kids lunches or that you have food at home to pack a lunch. People have lost jobs, are behind in bills, risk getting utilities cut off, etc. I am not talking for everyone but there are a group of people that barely miss the income guidelines for FREE/reduced meals that have a hard time. You are not rich if you barely miss the cut off! I am the director of our towns Food Bank, it is a volunteer position, we have been open almost a year. Prior to that I ran our church food pantry for 2 years. Let me tell you it has been a real eye opener about our small town. I knew there was a need before, from working in Child protective Services and Foster Care years ago in a large city, but the need has gotten worse over the past year. Some people barely have enough to eat at home, much less send a lunch with a kid, if they are just over the income guidelines. Oklahoma is the 4th hungriest state in the United States. Wow, I guess we are lucky, we live in a small town. When my daughter lunch bill reaches $25, they let me know and I send in a check, mainly because it's easier than sending in $1.75 everyday which is what our school lunches cost, plus she doesn't eat everyday, if it is something she doesn't like she doesn't eat.
