Wink I am finally going to get my first tattoo next saturday

Oh boy and this btw will also be my husband's as well. Acutally we are going as a family. We have been talking about getting doing this for awhile. Between my 3 children they already have several between them. Again this is the first time for me and my husband. For me I am having my brother Sonny's name on my left ankle with a small yellow rose and a small heart. For my husband he is putting a big heart on his shoulder on his back and inside the shoulder will be my name and the names of our children. I will plan on going back because I want to also add a small heart on my shoulder with my husbands name inside of it as well. As far as the kids goes only my son Tommy knows for sure what his new Tattoo will be. He already has this unique sun on his upper arm and he is adding Sonny for my brother that is going to make me and my parents so very happy. As far as my daughters they have changed their minds so we will have to see. Anyway else here have tattoo's please share thanks so much. Catherine

I always say, if it makes you happy...do it. Personally, I do not like them and will never have any. None of my children want them, but my mom got one for her 60th birthday and my very conservative sister got a couple of small ones when my mom went.

It is funny that I have always been the wilder, free spirit, untamed one, but would never get one, and my sister is the total opposite of me and has a few.

I agree. If it makes you happy, and is well thought out, do it! It's neat that your whole family is going together. Certainly not too many families that can claim that. I personally would never get a tattoo, but that's just my preference.

I know and at our ages me and my dh 47 and 46 this is going to be our first for us personally this will be it while I do few some tattoo's as beautiful all over the body and too many for me personally are too many but again a personal choice, that , the person has to live with for sure. Now for my son Tommy this will be his 5th tattoo however he is only adding my brother's name, me and my husband have told him it is enough for now to wait until he is older to decide if he wants to get more. However he is an adult and over 21 and he can make those decisions for himself, only time will tell. I personally think we need the kids there for moral support as we both have heard from so many people either it hurts so much, or its nothing, so time will tell for sure. Thanks so far for your comments. Catherine

Keep us posted Catherine. Sounds like a fun family day

I'm not a tattoo person either, but I have my nose pierced. A lot of people are shocked because it "seems out of character" for me. Gotta keep them guessing!

Both of my sons have several tattoos. They went on a trip to Ireland years ago and came back with matching crosses on their upper arms. DS 2 has "coexist" on his forearm.

Freer no piercings for either me nor my husband only the normal earrings in the ear, which when I was younger I had 6 in one ear and seven in another . Now I only use 2 of each in both my ears. My husband only has his one ear pierced. Between my children they have several piercings and so do so many of their friends, again a personal choice. I love the story my dad always tells my son that when he was in the service way back then, how he got his dark teal colored tattoo's and they were only 2.50 each how times have changed for sure. WTG. What a neat family thing to do. I keep wanting my husband to go with me to get one but he chickens out.

I know Judy that is why honestly my husband needs us all there, for me really the needles do not bother me at all. For starter after having children and then all the years of having to sit in that dentist chair I have had so many injections in my mouth, more then I care to think about lol. For my husband and this recently happened he went to his annual physical he was so worried about the needle. Thanks again. Catherine

Thanks Deddlastt for the ending comment totally was mean't for me about not going back on your word. I say this because I said I was leaving and would not return correct???. However someone and others as well were nice enough to start a thread and after thinking my thoughts through decided to stay. So you are completely telling me never once, ever in your whole lifetime you never changed your mind???. And again I have proven my point about you, you simply cannot leave me alone and further more you continue and every chance you have to pick at me and simply have to come into every single post I made and made a rude comment back to me .. you did it again, and you will do it again. I responded, staying on topic, about tattoos.

I don't come into every single post you make, much less make a rude comment, it's in black and white - not there.

No, no Deddlastt, you are not getting off that easy, you knew exactly what you were saying when you ended you comment with and I quote " I don't go back on my word" end of quote. It would have been fine if you would have simply stated I never got any tattoo's and nor do I plan to end of comments, but dear you knew exactly what you were saying when you ended you comments. And look only a few days after me Catherine said I was leaving the cafe... sure okay yawn as well. Catherine

I have 4....and will be getting more!
My sisters and my niece have more than one each.
My boyfriend has got his first one started. His best friend is a tattoo artist. (and I do mean artist! J's work is awesome!!! I have an original he designed just for me).

Tats aren't for everyone. And I highly recommend getting your first one where it can't be seen unless you want it seen. Just in case you find out that tats aren't really your "thing". I also recommend NOT getting a tattoo for the sake of getting a tattoo. Any tattoo you get should mean something to you and have some personal significance to you. Too many people get a tat (especially younger adults) because it's "cool" or because it's the "in" thing to do.

FWIW--I don't think that the tattoo process hurts. I actually went to sleep during one!

No tats here. I really find them kind of repulsive. I guess it's my age. When I was little, only sailors low lifes, and whores had them. When my son went into the Navy years ago, he had two instructions, come back in one piece and no tats. For once he listened to me. He would have to have been pretty drunk to do it, since both my kids are, and have always been, terrified of needles.

Really? That is incredibly insulting to lots and lots of people who have tattoos.

You could have simply said you found them repulsive and never mentioned low-lifes, sailors and whores. By saying that, it seems to me that you are implying that is what you believe NOW....
(and FYI? I'm neither a low-life, sailor or a whore...)

Not true. I simply said that as a child that was how it was thought of. That has colored my perception of the whole thing. I'm older than most of you and I can remember hearing my mother talking about how terrible it was to be tattooed. Everyone has things that their parents have said that has stuck with them. Some good, some bad. I think if you want to get one, it's your choice. If I think they are repulsive, that's mine. I realize that they are very "in" now. I also realize that a lot of people have them. That's fine with me, as long as I don't have to get one or see anyone else get one.

I just wonder how much everyone is going to like theirs when they get old and wrinkled and that artwork begins to look like a multi-colored wrinkly skin. Perhaps by then they will have developed a removal treatment that is not more painful than the original procedure. If they do, I would buy stock in it. I also think that legs stay nice looking longer that other body parts, so if you are doing it, then do it there. Then when you are in your 70's and can still strut your stuff, your legs will still be looking good and the tat will too.

The calf one sounds more painful than the others. Was it at all painful?

I have 2 tats, a rose with a sunburst on my right hiney cheek and a patriotic butterfly with tribals on each side on my lower back. That one was a birthday gift from my dh several years ago. I think my next one will be some sort of ankle bracelet, or something on my leg right above the ankle.

I would never ever get a tattoo EVER! I just don't get the whole tattoo fascination/fad/craze! Why would I ever want some something on my body that I could never get rid of? Who'd want to look at the same lame piece of artwork for the rest of their life? You do realize it's unbelievably expensive to have them removed don't you?

The calf tattoo only hurt because the position I had to sit for the artist---got a couple of cramps in my leg. Otherwise, didn't hurt.

Lame piece of artwork?? LOL
Each one of my tattoos are highly personal TO ME. Each one represents something special to me that I will ALWAYS love.
Besides, if I ever go missing, or my body turns up dead they can use the tattoos to ID me! :-)

I agree except for the lame part. Some are quite beautiful, except for the being on skin part. Most are not, I guess except to the owner.

I don't even have my ears pierced. I think I've had enough surgeries in my life, (with more to come), that I really don't feel the need to subject myself to the possibility of more pain and perhaps infections. Marilyn says hers didn't hurt, but there are a lot of people who say it does. I guess it depends on the person's pain threshold, location of the tat and the person doing the tat.

Funny story, my eyesight is not great and I met a gal that had this strange looking growth on her ankle. It was about the size of a nickel. My eye kept wandering to it I guess, because she finally said something about admiring her tattoo. It was a little bug and all I could see was a dark blur that looked like a large hairy growth. I'm glad I didn't tell her she needed to have it checked by a doctor.

yes, it does. I have a very high pain threshold. But, I have been fortunate that the artists doing my tats have had a very "soft" touch. Some artists are particularly sadistic and will "dig" in.
Helps that the last one was done by my boyfriend's best friend (and he's my friend too) he was afraid to hurt me!

I wish I had the guts to get one, but I don't. I'm too worried about getting some sort of infection or having a saggy tattoo when I'm 80. My sister has a couple and I've seen some actresses that have tattoos that are cool. However, what looks great on someone who is 26 and in great shape might not necessarily look the same on a middle-aged woman (referring to myself). Just my personal opinion. I like looking at them and admiring the ones that are exceptionally well done, but I'm too chicken to get one myself. Good luck with yours, Catherine! I hope it turns out the way you want it.

a very wise person told me prior to my tattoo not to put a living person's name on my tat, except my kids.

Living people can change, can disappoint, can leave you, etc. Imagine the difficulty if your Significant other/husband were to leave you/divorce you--and you had his name tattooed on your body.

A good tattoo artist would be able to cover it up with a larger tattoo.

Good point. But I would probably opt for little toupee like eyebrows..lol...And then if that didn't work, get the tattoos. In fact, I might even opt for tattooed eyeliner. I'm allergic to a lot of things. It would be just my luck to find out that I'm allergic to tattoo ink, right after they were partway through one eyebrow.

I would love to get one on my ankle that looks like a bracelet. I just can't figure out what to do for a design.
I had my belly button pierced 14yrs ago. Didn't hurt anymore than having my 2nd holes done in my ears.. The hardest part of it was having to make sure nothing rubbed it during the healing process, which can take up to a year. I love it. My hubby bought me a ring for it that matches my engagement ring for our 15th anniversary. What a great shock. He's normally not good at buying presents.

Not necessarily...and since you don't have any tattoos you wouldn't understand.
Depending on location and what is inked, it may not be able to be covered and still look good.

Has nothing to do with whether the artist is good or not. Again, unless you know a lot about tats and "ink", you haven't a clue about "cover up work".

My comment was merely a suggestion that if you are considering on getting a tattoo with someones name on it to keep in mind a design that could be easily covered with another tattoo in case the ugly happens.
And I do know a few good tattooists that are pretty good at covering ugly ones up.

that is not what you said...but whatever. I'm not going to argue with someone who apparently has never had a tattoo.

And if a person getting a tattoo is thinking "well, I better get a design that will be easily covered up/changed if something happens to Joe/Jo," then what's the point? Kind of like getting married and thinking "well, I can always get a divorce..."

Then I started thinking that "what if they screw them up and I end up looking like Uncle Leo (on Seinfeld episode)" HAHAHAHA!

You don't have to have a tattoo to know anything about them!
Your reasoning is like saying "why give birth to a baby when it's just going to die someday anyway."
But nevermind I'm not going to argue with someone who doesn't even know the meaning of the word ! LMAO!

Red face

To Dollydeal , why in the world would my husband who loves me so much and dearly loved my brother Sonny be upset if I put my brothers name on my wrist. You have to remember my brother Sonny and me were very close a very special part of my life, truly wish there were more people like him. It has been almost 9 years since he passed away, so it is not like I rushed to the store to get the tattoo the day after . I have thought about this for a really long time. Now for my husband to be upset over my brother who we both loved so much and miss so much, that is being plain childish for sure, my husband has told me many times before to put my brothers name someone on my body in loving memory of him. Why you would think this I cannot understand, you must be mature to accept this, if I was putting a ex boyfriend then I can see your point. Now as far as putting my husbands name and him putting mine, we could have done that almost 26 years ago and we would still be, where we are still very much in love, we are each other's soul-mates and I nor him would never give it a second chance. Thanks to all for your input. Catherine

You make little to no sense...but that's ok, as long as you're happy in your little world.

the baby analogy you presented is just twisted and sick, though.

Never said it would bother him,I'm sure he doesn't care at all and supports every move you make.I'm just saying if it was me I would feel awkward getting a tattoo of my brother first ,especially when my husband was getting one with my name on it. If it doesn't bother you, thats perfectly fine.I hope everything thing goes smooth and it comes out perfect for you.I know how you feel about Sonny.I'm sure he must have been a real saint for you to have felt so strongly about him.
Are you planning on taking anything before hand to help ease the pain?

Okay Dollydeal that was a much better post and made more sense. I sincerely appreciate the kind words you said about Sonny, well to me he was my angel here in earth, and now he is my guardian angel in heaven. As far as the pain I do not plan to take anything like mentioned before I have had so much dental work done on my mouth and teeth over the years , the needles do not bother me. I will also focus on all the pain and suffering my brother Sonny endured and if he did it with a smile for all those months and never complained, then I surely can sit there for 1/2 hour or whatever, because the end result will be a wonderful dedication to my brother Sonny.

I was being nice....

I really try to not say or respond to you because you are incredible naive (or incredibly simple minded).

The baby analogy doesn't work because we're all going to die, and too many ladies on here have suffered child deaths.

If you go into anything in your life and think well, if it doesn't work out you can just "throw it away or cover it up or start over" ( marriage, tattoo, etc.) then you are deluding yourself. Sometimes marriages don't work, and divorce is the answer--but you shouldn't be thinking that from the day of the wedding.
The same w/ tats--if you get one with the thought of "better pick out a design that can be easily changed if I don't like it" then you are going in w/ the wrong attitude. Sure, some can be changed, but you shouldn't be focused on that. Tattoos are meant to be permanent, and anyone who gets one should get it with that in mind! And tats should be given a LOT of thought prior to having it done. Research, research, research....just like anything.

If I'm naive then you are incredibly stupid! Along with being a hiprocrite! You think your so sensitive to peoples delimas but you go around looking for ways to stomp on and berate anyone you can.But I understand that that is just the way you are and you are one of those people who think they are perfect and do not see anything wrong with what you do.Well, go on being Miss Nasty.Thats what you will always be remembered as.

LOL! You seem to have something to say, go ahead and say it--don't hold back now.

Sweetie: stomping and berating is not what this is about.
You said one thing, and I called you on it.
You backpedaled, and I called you on it.

You made an analogy that was inappropriate and I called you on it.
That's what this is/was about.

I know I'm not perfect. God, don't I know it! And yes, there are things that I have done wrong.

And frankly, if people who don't know me choose to remember I'm flattered. If MC were to "poof" disappear overnight, there are very few that post here that I would remember. And the ones I would remember are the ones that I have chosen to get to know (either here or away from here). So, if you want to remember me---more power to you.

I didn't back pedal on anything, only explained myself to you which is like trying to explain to a 2 year old why they have to eat their green beans. You "called me on it"? HA, you were just trying to pick apart what I wrote like you do everywhere else on this board.YOU never try to understand, YOU just look for arguements.I guess thats how you get you jollies, whatever.Innapropiate analogy?Umm, no.It was related to my point. The fact that others have had tragedys around the subject has nothing to do with it.I went through 2 HORRIBLE divorces, and so do did many others here.I suppose your analogy was OK thouugh?
Honestly ,every word you read in a sentence can remind someone of something horrific that happened in their life.It happens every day.The world doesn't revolve around yours or my tragedys. You deal with them the best way you can and try to put it behind you.

Find a reputable tattoo shop, go in and talk to one of the artists. Tell them and work with them for a design.

You could always get his name or initials in a fancy script w/ his DOB and make it look like an ankle bracelet. Just something simple and tasteful.

When you do actual pictures you have to be careful with going "small". You'll lose details and the picture will seem blurred/without definition.

To nightowlrn that sounds lovely for I remember how you often speak of your son, and when you mentioned the word sun, it melted my heart. For all whom know me my brother's nickname was Sonny, his real name is Peter Daniel. Like I mentioned my son Tommy also has a sun on his shoulder and it has these beautiful yellow and orange rays surrounding the sun. Now when we go back he will add the name Sonny for his uncle. I do have often thought about what to put since I already wear alot of old and antique and silver jewelry, I do not want to go overboard. I already know it will be his name on my wrist I was thinking of adding a small pale yellow rose or a small heart plain and simple. Lovely idea I truly love it . Catherine

Once you start with Tats you get addicted .. started with my first in 1996 a superman tat like Jon Bon Jovi's on my ankle, got my second which I designed in 2001 a heart with banners saying Bon Jovi Forever and in the last year I have gotten 3, a tramp stamp of a butterfly with 6 stars representing my kids and angels, and 4 hearts for my sons intertwined with vines its beautiful, then I have the Ed Hardy Love Kills SLowly on my right ribcage, and on my left a heart with a dagger that says love. I have a new one designed by my boyfriend I am hoping to get next year when I have some money saved up its all my kids name and my little angels name intertwined on vines. He is going to get the one from 2001 fixed for me.

I swore I would stop at 3 then bamm one right after another I got 2 more, I am addicted to piercings too.

I've had my tattoos for over 25 yrs and I wish I had never gotten them. We've talked about it before. If there was one thing I could change about my body it would be to remove them.

You're old enough to know what you want Catherine. I was young and I have changed a lot since them. I regret having them. They've affected me in every way from getting a good job to whom I have dated to what landlords let me live in their rentals. I have been judged by them for many years and they are not me.

I always say take the dumbest thing you did in your early 20s and write it on your forehead that is what my tattoos are to me.

I have a tat and I think that anyone getting one should have personal reasons for getting it, not just because its cool or because their friends are getting one too, etc.

Mine is the Penn State logo with "For The Glory" written above it, its on the upper part of my right arm where I can see it anytime but I can hide it if needs be. It's about 3 inches across and 2 inches high.

I got mine because I'm an alum and have very strong feelings for my school and all the things that happened during the years I was there. I got it after I lived thru the very worst time of my entire life and whenever things seemed really bad I'd look at it, remember good times and draw from the strength that the image represents to me. Sounds crazy to most people but it really has been a source of comfort to me in some very dark times.

It really didn't hurt very much to get put on and I'm a complete needle phobe. Artist told me that I selected one of the best areas to get done because its the least sensitive. Just be sure and follow the after care directions to a "T" so you get the very best result. I love my tat and have not regretted it for a single second.

I have a small heart on my left ankle with my kids names around it. I want to get a few more. I want a tribal design with 3 butterflies in the middle of it on my lower back, a cross with my brother's name but I am not sure where I want that one yet and i want to do something small on my right ankle, I was thinking a rose or another heart.
