When is it Over?

Today's electronic world has given us new ideas on manners.

When you talk on the phone you say good bye when the conversation is over. When you write a letter you close with some sort of closing salutation.

What about texts, IMs, and emails? You type, she responds, your respond. How do you know when it's over? It seems not right to just stop. My husband and I use o&o for over and out.

How do you know it's over?

I always either write bye or talk to you later.

Well for me, I like texts because they are open ended like that. I can send someone a text and they can reply when they get a chance. I hate calling people because I'm always afraid it's a bad time. With a text I figure when they get a chance they'll reply. So to me every conversation can go on forever even if it takes days, weeks.

I will sometimes say Hey I'm headed to bed, to the store, cooking dinner or something if I won't be able to reply for awhile.

That's exactly what I mean! A conversation can go on for weeks literally. I just feel kind of weird. Is the other person wondering if I still have something to say, etc.

I think it's just that I'm so used to doing things the "old fashioned way" that I have this expectation of a conversation with a beginning, a middle, and a clear end.

After reading your post Furry I feel like most people would agree with you. And really that is the benefit about texting.
