ancestry.com ?

I think I am ready to pay for what I think this site can offer. I can go back to my great grandparents on both sides, but no further and think maybe ancestry.com could get me back yet another generation or more.

I would be interested in your experience of this site - and whether it's the primo site or if there is a better one. Also, they are offering 14 days free, but still want my cc info, is it easy to cancel / any recommendations for 3 months vs 1 year?

Any tidbits would be appreciated. tia

I'm not sure about ancestry but check your local library. There is a program called Heritage Quest that you can do free with your library card at many libraries nationwide. For our local library I can do it from home just logging on. I haven't done it yet but I know it's available. You might want to try this first.

WORTH EVERY DIME WE PAY FOR IT
In fact I just left their site to come here to this one. I had been researching this morning.

I love it! and we pay about $155.00 every January for the annual US only subscription. I don't pay the extra for World because I only trace back to our "Boat riders". LOL! I get their country of origin and then leave it at that. We all come from Adam and Eve right?

I loved it because it put me in touch with cousins I would have never met that had been passed PICTURES!! woo hoo!

I too highly recommend using Heritage Quest from your library. I can access mine via my home computer by logging on through our local library's website. I search at 3 am in the morning if I'm so inclined. Their census index saves boatloads of time! use the advanced feature there.
Also, not sure if your library will offer it also, (ours does) use Footnote.com as an extra resource too.

Rootsweb of course is free and Genforum is cool you just have to know to look in the upper right hand of the screen when you're on a State Forum board to go deeper into an individual county.

Genealogy is a passion of mine. I love the family history you get to tell your children.

Did you know that for just 10 generations of only recording JUST your mom, dad, grandparents and direct line (no brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins etc)...
For just 10 generations back that is 1,024 people. Your parents, Their parents, Their parents and their parents etc.... and so on.

My database grows by the day!

I didn't know much about my family at all. I was able to trace family all the way back to the late 1800's! It is amazing!

I'm another one who's just started looking in to my family. FamilySearch.org is a free site and I've found it to be quite helpful. I found a great-great grandfather that was born in 1805! Another site that can give you some leads is Find A Grave - Millions of Cemetery Records .

In June I'm going subscribe to Ancestry for 3 months. Summer in Florida is when I spend most of my time in the house.

Will be checking out Rootsweb and GenForum later on today. BTW, did anyone watch Do You Know Who You Are last night. Rosie O'Donnell's story was quite moving.

I did it. There is a 14 day free trial ( you do have to give cc info and select mon/3 mon/1 yr, however it says you can cancel and their 800 # is all over the site ).

I spent a couple of hours entering what I knew, finding what I knew would be right and exploring. It also allows you to send another person the ability to see what you have put together ( as I understand it ) no doubt to entice that person to join. I sent it to my mom to look at. I had one aunt who seemed to be the family historian, I sure wish she was still here to do this with me. I wish some of the others were still here too.

I am enjoying this and will do my dh's side as well.

Have FUN!
We have living individuals on our tree and have the privacy setting as PRIVATE but we do invite cousins and such that are coming to the reunions and what not.

If you ever need or want info - PM on here or you might still have my email addy from the cooking board Catt's Cookbook give away a few year's back.

You may even be able to clear up your brickwalls with the click of a mouse.

Good Luck!

Weighing in a bit late on this, but, wanted to add that my sister is heavy into geneaology in our family. I know she uses ancestry.com ( I have gotten her this for XMAS, LOL) and she enjoys the digging and finding the slightest morsel of something. It is truly very interesting, and I am glad she is doing this. She has even gone to some grave sights and taken pictures.

I hope you are enjoying your ancestry.com
