Fund Raisers for People

OK, so we've talked about school/group fundraisers, but what about fundraisers for individuals? It seems to be a growing trend to have fund raisers for friends/family with medical needs. At least once a month, I'm asked to buy this or that, or go to a benefit dinner. Don't get me wrong, I feel for anyone having trouble...but I can't afford to support all of them. Years ago, my mother struggled for 5 years with cancer. After she died, we chipped away at the medical bills and finally paid them off. Nobody sold candles or chocolates, or had a spaghetti dinner. Please don't think I'm cruel and uncaring... I do give generously to many causes. What do the rest of you think?

I think whatever they want to do is fine. I don't have to give and it does not affect my life, so what is the harm? That is what I think, but I know I am in the minority.

I think that particularly when a family has no insurance and is hit with something out of the blue, it is a heartwarming show of support. I haven't had anyone try to sell me anything like candies or cookies for that purpose, but I've seen jars in convenience stores and dinners (sometimes with silent auctions).

Generally, I don't mind it.
